Denon AVR-2307CI set-up

Grrrr. I want to throw the remote out the window or vent in some equally dramatic fashion. Maybe this post will help calm me and make me think things through more rationally.

I'll start by listing my troubles.

Problem number A: I can't get the onscreen menu to function. In the manual, it seems like such a basic function but it won't work for me. Every time I hit setup menu, the TV says "Not Supported Mode". (Samsung LNS4092)

Problem number B: I can't get audio sources to stay hooked to video sources. It might help if I could see the onscreen menu, but I'm sure that everything is assigned right.

Problem number C: I only have a 3.1 system (LCR) hooked up temporarily, but I can't seem to find a way to consistently run 3.1. In fact, I can't get any audio right now, even though I can watch the STB through HDMI and the DVD through component (until I get another HDMI cable).

Any help by a Denophile here would be greatly appreciated.

You gotta get the OSD working, don't know how you would do anything without it(especially assigning audio/video combinations). I'm confused about your video connections to the TV from the receiver. Keep in mind that the 480i signal from the receiver will not overlay a 720 or 1080 signal from the receiver.

You are correct, sir. I kinda just figured out the 480i thing when I slowed down to try and decode some of the gibberish in the owners manual. It's late and I'm tired and frustrated, but I'm getting there.

As for the MIA OSD, the front panel seems to have a pretty good message system that lets you know where you are, so I was able to assign everything through the front panel messages. Although, there was a time when the front panel would blank out and I couldn't get it to come back up no-how.

Anyway, am I supposed to run a composite or S-video line to the TV to see the OSD and change the TV input just to use the menu?

Oh, and I solved numbers B and C in the meanwhile. It turns out there is an input button on the remote that changes the audio input source of whatever you're watching, over-riding the settings in the set-up menu. Also, I'm running my 3.1 in 5 channel stereo and it seems to work OK. I'm open to better suggestions here, too.

I wouldn't use this mode for watching movies. You're better off telling the receiver that you only have Left, Center, Right and Sub connected. Or just use the 'Auto Setup' feature.

cheers:)

Your Samsung TV will not accept a 480i signal over HDMI. I don't see any alternative to hooking up a composite cable and changing the TV input. If your receiver is like my 3806, it will only output the OSD at 480i.

That's what I do with my 3806. A S-video out from my receiver to it's very own video input on the TV to access the setup menus. There is a way to do overlay that I *think* requires HDMI from the receiver to the display and also the setup s-video going to the same video input on the display. I may be wrong on the exact details however.

^^ I do not believe that is correct. As long as your hdmi is not outputting any other signals, say in tuner mode, there is no reason the TV will not accept the 480i signal via hdmi.

But yes, if you have another signal going that is higher, you would need a separate input to the TV to switch to for OSD.

Thanks to all of you for your info. I am going to see if I can get the OSD to work via HDMI with all other video sources off.

Grrrr. The last thing I did last night was watch Saving Private Ryan on DVD. Turned the units off and went to bed. Now I can't watch DVD. TV says "Not supported mode". Nothing's changed since last night. Grrrr.

I just threw the Denon DVD into the system using the exact same connection and it works fine. Must be a handshake issue with the Samsung DVD?

Have you checked out page 55 of the manual?

Yeah, didn't seem to work though. I still haven't actually seen the OSD. It's OK because the good news is that everything but that is working fine now. I went out and paid too much for my extra HDMI cable just to get it all finished and now all my audio and video sources come right up with the touch of a single button with only one HDMI to the TV, as advertised.

Call me one happy camper.
