Denon AVR-1612 inputs

Hello,

I am a "newbie" type and please bear with this basic question. I am trying to hook up my wife's VHS player with the RCA cable (white, yellow, and red) to my Denon AVR-1612. My problem is that there appears to be only 2 RCA setups on the Denon. One is on the CBL/SAT input(HDMI or RCA) and the DVD input(HDMI or RCA). I am currently using both CBL/SAT and DVD inputs with HDMI connections to a cable box and a dvd player.

Is the only option to disconnect the DVD player HDMI cable from the Denon DVD input and connect to another HDMI input on the Denon(and then connect the VHS player to the Denon DVD RCA input)? Or what are my options? Thanks in advance.

I don't know how well it will work on this receiver, but I've actually tripled up on an input on my old RX-V992, with one think plugged in analog, one optical and one coax digital.

You can try using that input for both the VHS and DVD, with any luck while the DVD player is off it will use the RCA jacks, and when it detects signal on HDMI switch over to it.

Thanks Grador. I think my problem is that the setup screen specifies which cable I am going to use(HDMI or RCA), so I have to choose one or the other.

Looked through the manual and thought I saw an "auto" option, guess i was wrong.

I would move the DVD player to a different input, then in the setup you can change what the inputs are named. So, when you switch to the 'game' input (for example) it will now read 'DVD' and when you switch to the 'DVD' input, it will now read 'VHS'. It only takes a few mintues to setup, and once it is there, you are good to go.

Thanks BMXTRIX. I didn't realize you could change the input names. I will have to search for that. So you are also saying that the remote that has the buttons labeled DVD, Game, etc. will automatically adjust to the changed input?

Probably not. I've always used a good universal remote setup with all my Denon stuff so that the family doesn't need to remember the stupid Denon remote before they use the 12 other remotes required. Just one remote should be used and it should not be any of the remotes that come with the products you already own.

Get a good remote, and then setup the system however you want. That way, nobody will be confused by things. Once you've got it figured out, it really is very easy to use a good remote.

I've always been a fan of the logitech harmony remotes. They control most things and you can plug them into your computer to set the programming. Things are intuitive as well, since most combinations are stuff like "watch tv" or "watch a movie" "listen to music" and by hitting the button associated with the activity you want to do it automatically turns on everything that you need to do that activity and changes everything to the right settings.

Thanks for all the advice. I am still having a problem with the RCA inputs. I decided to set up the RCA inputs for the VHS player on the Denon, but no luck. I can get sound, but no video. I chose , on the setup screen, video and audio via cable and not HDMI. But I get no video. RCA cables are red, white, and yellow, and I put them in the correct input colors. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I suspect a resolution mismatch.

Check that your receiver upconverts from composite via HDMI. If it does,bb make sure upconversion is turned on.

If not you will have to change the resolution of your TV manually when playing your VCR, and change it again when going to other sources.

One alternative may be to run the RCA cable directly to the TV and use the TV's speakers. From what I remember VHS tapes did not have the best sound quality. Alternatively you can run a cable to the receiver. I don't think the 1612 has upconversion.
