Denon Amp / Samsung TV via HDMI (no sound?)

Need some help from some of the more experienced members please... my system is as follows:

- Samsung UN55D8000
- Denon AVR-2807
- 5.1 speaker setup

I recently purchased the TV and figured it would be easy to connect it to the amp via HDMI in order to output the sound to the speakers however this has not been the case. I've read both manuals and been through menu/submenu options but have found no solution to my problem. I can always hook them up with component cables however I prefer the more elegant solution of HDMI. Anyone with advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. tia

Welcome to the forum!

My interpretation of what you want is to play sound from the TV through the speakers connected to the Denon, and to do that, you've connected an HDMI cable from the TV to the Denon. Is that correct?

If so, that won't work. Although newer components can send audio back and forth through an HDMI connection (using what is called the Audio Return Channel, or ARC), your Denon is older and does not support that. Therefore, the HDMI audio is only one-way, going from the Denon to the TV.

To get sound from the TV to play through the speakers connected to the Denon, you'll need to make a separate audio connection from the TV to the Denon. You have two choices: the "DIGITAL (AUDIO OUT OPTICAL)" and "AUDIO OUT" connections on the TV. The best option is the digital optical connection, as it can provide full 5.1 surround sound. You'll need an optical cable for that. If you don't have one, they cost around $5-$10.

Does that help?

thanks for your succinct explanation Adam. I'll try the optical route... much appreciated

Why are we sending sound from the tv?

The HDMI connection should come from the cab/sat box to the receiver.

Adam;
Why would a receiver have an HDMI input that don't support audio?:confused:

Then, HDMI out from the receiver to a HDMI input on the tv.

Well, I do that because I watch over-the-air broadcasts. Perhaps the OP is doing that, too.

Excellent point, if there is one.

It's the HDMI output that doesn't support the Audio Return Channel. Newer receivers and TVs can use a single HDMI connection between the receiver's HDMI output and the TV's HDMI input (if both support ARC) to pass audio both ways.

How about an HDMI input on the receiver.

That is, if the tv will send HDMI/out from over-the-air input. This is something I do not know.

Did. Thought the goal was HDMI!

What's the harm in trying an HDMI input?

Or, grabbing a receiver that looks to p/u more channels over-the-air!

I think the goal is sound from the TV. :) The initial attempt was to use a single HDMI cable. The TV won't do any audio that an optical connection can't handle. I have my TV connected to my receiver with an optical cable and it works great.

Sure, but that would incur an expense. And, a wait.

HDMI input on the receiver won't work?

No. The OP wants to run audio from the TV to the receiver. I explained exactly how that can be done. It cannot be done using an HDMI cable. The TV supports ARC, but the Denon does not.

Just seemed to me OP may have had it connected to a monitor output, which is why I suggested trying an input.

I know I would try it. Don't see the harm.

Hmmm. I think that I see where you're going with that. I'm not sure that the ARC jack on the TV (to the OP - it's the "HDMI IN 2 (ARC)" jack) will send a signal as a regular audio output, but just maybe it will. If it does, then I've learned something today.

That was the first thing I tried >> no dice

- I will update after trying the optical suggestion. I'm sure it will work perfectly but just for the sake of closure....
