With the addition of an optional XM antenna, the AVR-4806 becomes a complete high-performance XM Radio tuner – and the industry’s first premium A/V receiver to offer the full range of services from XM Satellite Radio, America’s leading satellite radio provider. The Denon AVR-4806 (SRP: $3,500), available in April, offers many of the industry’s most advanced surround sound and A/V distribution capabilities, including the groundbreaking MultEQxt technology from Audyssey Laboratories that provides listeners with a “sweet spot” in up to eight listening positions in a room.

My first 2 impressions:

1) Judging by the pictures, that receiver looks like one whale of a model! Is it me or is that thing huge?

2) By looking at the back panel, it's really easy to notice the small footprint that HDMI consumes compared to all the others connectors consuming the rest of the surface area, that's what I like to see!

Thanks for the pics,

Do that many people really want XM radio built into their AVR? I still haven't met a single person that uses their AVR's tuner.

I think that this time Denon got it wrong. I'm a Denon fan but I'll take an HD FM tuner over XM. I have been waiting for the 4802 replacement and I think that its the Yam 4600 for me.

Agree with R&R. My tuner used soley for the AM dial for ballgames. I have my own FM station. Its called WRED - IPOD with 4000 songs on shuffle, or blues, or jazz, or personal playlists...you get the picture

I can't even verify that the tuner on my Denon works! ;) I've never once tried it, nor do I have any type of antenna hooked up. Reception of Minnesota Public Radio, a superb all-classical station, is very strong here, but I only listen to the radio in my bedroom or in my car.

Does the new Yammie make this obsolete?

With the introduction of the new Yamaha 4600 there seems to be some real competition here folks. In fact, they seem to offer identical features, but, the Yamaha undercuts the price by over $1,000.00! Does this make the Yamaha the bargain of the two or even make the Denon obsolete?

I don't think so. The Yamaha looks to be a great receiver, but the Denon has some features that put that extra $1000 to good use. The new AVR-4806 has Audyssey Room correction, THX Ultra 2 (vs THX Select2 for Yamaha), and video-to-HDMI upconversion.

Does this make the Yamaha bad? No way. Just a different class of product. They both start with a "4" but Yamaha will likely have a different product to directly compete with the Denon 4806.

As a brand new member & a fan of your site, I'm posting this first thread in order to know your opinion about the following:

considering that AVR 4806 and AVR 3805 might be considered as high-end gears, why should one pay $ 2k more, just because of some extra items, such as HMDI, THX, etc.
I truly believe that in a very short time we're going to have the 3805 with some additionals, such as fire wire, HDMI ins and THX badge.

Yamaha is running ahead with the new 4600, which could be a sneak preview of the 2600, as mentioned in one of these threads.

Considering that I'm willing to buy an AVR 3805, I better wait some more time, until they release the "version B" for the 2006 line, so I'll get the current 3805 for a much better price, indeed.

By early next month I'll be in Orlando, when I'll have the opportunity to hear both gears at same time (AVR 3805 x RX-V 2500 performing on same speakers & ambience, in order to finally decide wich one to take in due time).
I really wanna "hear" this fight, as basically everydoby's is talking good things about both gears (Denon & Yamaha). I currently have a Denon model AVR - 2803 and its sounds just superb.

At any rate, even with the satellite tuner built in, you still have to pay a subscription to the service to use it, don't you?

or was that just a knee-jerk reaction by Denon to match the latest Yamaha offerings ?? sometimes these companies overcompete between themselves about really silly things and the upgrade-driven consumers are left going "huh" ?? while the bargain hunters are going "I win again"
