I was looking through the online information on the denon receivers, when they are put in 9 channel mode, are the extra 2 channels processed, or just duplicates of 2 of the surround channels?

If it's actually set-up for full 9-channel usage, then the two extra channels are just a duplicate of the side surrounds. And you really need a separate amp to power them as the receiver only has 7-amps. Generally, the surround-B channels are set-up and positioned for 5.1 multi-channel Hi-rez (SACD, DVD-Audio) music listening.

FYI,
The flagship Yamaha can process 11 seperate channels and I think it might even power all of them. Extra speakers not included.
