I'm in the process of replacing my home theater due to a direct lightning strike :( .
I'm trying to decide which receiver to purchase either the AVR5805 or the SR9600. Any input would be helpful.

That really sucks man. If you can afford it, go for the 5805. There is simply nothing like it. Have you seen the review here?

Also, you should invest in a heavy duty power conditioner from Furman, Tripp Lite, or APC. Don't want to have a reoccurance!

Thanks for the input. No power conditioner would have helped. My house took a direct hit on the power lines right at the house. I lost everything electronic that was plugged in. It even welded one side of the breaker panel.

Holy moly. Sorry to hear that. Well, I'm a Marantz guy, but based on the specs, and if you have the space, I'd have to say 5805.

Perhaps Denon AVR-4806

A more apples to apples comparison may be the new Denon AVR-4806. The Denon is cheaper based on MSRP. It also offers the Audyssey setup. Not knowing all your requirements, the 5805 may be overkill. I think you could flip a coin and be happy either way. :D

Yeah and one side you have the Denon 5805, the beast of all receivers, on the other you have the Denon 4806, one heck of a receiver with hdmi switching and all the neat stuff and an extra 2 grand to spend on other parts of the system. Wish I had those kinda options....lucky guy

Don’t know if this helps but when I spoke to the folks at Denon they deny any knowledge of a company called Marantz, but they can’t explain why the two share the same phone number.
 :) :D

that's rediculous, they are both owned by the same main company, so is Mcintosh. I can't believe they tried to feed you that

Since hijacking is well under way here I go.

Marantz is trying to weasel out of my 3yr warranty. They are saying that the Marantz Canada website (which was almost brand frigging new and is now missing) isn't kept up by Denon Marantz and that there have been problems with the web developer keeping things up to date. You can still see where the website used to be by going to Marantz.com. The guy that I spoke to at Marantz Canada told me my best bet would be to go to Buffalo which is a 2 hr. drive for service. You see it turns out Marantz Canada when distributed by Lenbrook was screwing its retailers royally by allowing chain stores to sell Marantz products in the same cities. Now that D&M is in charge that policy has stopped again (supposedly). They have also discontinued the Global warranty that applied up here, but left it intact in Europe. Now I am reduced to hoping nothing goes wrong with my receiver for the next 3 yrs, or else I'll have to go to, gasp, Buffalo. Oh well maybe I'll take in a hockey game when I'm in town.

Spiffy – it was said tongue-in-cheek, i.e. the distribution and tech support for the two companies are so closely tied at the hips you can’t tell the difference between them.

I would never spend 6k on a reciever...

If it were me I'd look at the Emotiva set up from AV123 or the Emotiva pre/pro and two Odyssey Stratos amps one being a two chanel for the fronts and the other a three chanel for the center and rears. You will have significantly better sound quality, imaging, sound stage and available power. Six grand on a reciever is just plain crazy when you can get a real system with seperates for less!! Even better go with an American made B&K ref 50 & two American made Odyssey Stratos amps for about the same money as an offshore built Dennon receiver. The B&K stuff is built future proof and they can upgrade when changes happen. I doubt denon will do this or you....... Klauss at Odyssey is awsome to deal with and all amps are built to order so you can have one the way you like!!! With Denon you get your choice of well a 5805 or a 5805????

Having the Emotiva pre/pro myself and being extremely satisfied with it I love the recommendation but the Denon offers some things the Emotiva does not that the original poster may or may not need.

Denon really should have just made the 5805 a seperates system and priced the amp at $2000 and the pre/pro at $4000 to get their $6000 price point. Personally the 5805 is not for me for one it's too expensive and two I just like seperates better if I am going to spend $3000 or more.

As for the Ref 50 over the Emotiva, I'd take my Emo anyday and I used to drool over the Ref 50 when I'd see it. Both are fine products though, my other pic in this price point would be the Anthem AVR 30. I'd also like to see how the new Onkyo and Integra card based units start to develop, I think the option of swapping out cards as new formats are introduced or your connection requirements change is awesome.

JeffGold, If you can swing it get the Denon 5805. It is incredible and by that it, IMO, beats dedicated pre/pros in the middle to upper ends. I just finished my new home and 34 ft. x 20 ft. dedicated theater and I am running the Denon 5805, Denon 2910 DVD, Runco 510 with B&W 803, HTM1, SCM for rears. I bi amped all 5 speakers and I can drive the B&W's to insane levels in my 5500 cubic ft. room.

When I was auditioning systems I looked at the Lexicon MC8, Classe, the Anthem D1, B&K and the Denon 5805 and I bought the Denon because the EQ seperated the Denon from the rest. The Denon, though is very complicated but once you get the hand of it it is very easy to use and operate.

Hope this helps.
