How do these two compare? I read the excellent review of the 5800 and mention of the Sony ES in several topics but no review!?!

The new Sony Digital receivers are just coming out. They look very promising and we are hopeful to get our hands on one for evaluation soon.

One thing that really stands out on these new Sonys is there horrible specs (on paper). The new 5000ES receiver has a THD rated at .6! Same for the 3000ES. The 9000, a $4,000+ receiver is a bit better at .15, but that is about what I would expect from a $200 receiver. The least expensive of the new ES line, the 1000ES has the best rating (.09). What gives? Does this have something to do with the new digital amps? Do they somehow give false measurements?

This higher distortion most certainly has to do with the digital amps and/or possibly the power supply. We also wonder just how good the SNR is and if the passive LC output filters will have deleterious effects on fidelity when presented with a reactive load such as a loudspeaker.

I think you have put in technical terms exactly what my concern is. Is this thing going to sound digital? When the first CD players came out we were all very excited about the "clean" sound until we listened more. It was awhile before the manufacturers started worring about the D/A conversion. After all we hear analog in the end.

The below URL provides a bit of information (from Sony) regarding their technological marvel, the new digital amps:

From agoraquest.com forum. Many people reported they have hissing problem with the 3000ES/5000ES at high volume and actual power output is far below the spec.
