Hi all,
I found a Denon 5800 online for about the same price as a 3805. I have not been able to find a lot of info on the 5800...mostly just on the later 5800 models. Is the 5800 for the same price a better deal than the 3805 or has the 3805 outpaced the older 5800 with options, Inputs/Outputs, etc.? Thanks.

Try the Denon site...they'll have all pertinent info on their discontinued models. I have the 5803, of which the 5800 is the predecessor. I belive you still have 7 seperate amplifiers at 170 watts per channel, and more hookups than you'll know what to do with. You of course will not have any hdmi/dvi connections (if that's important), no Denon Link, no PLII, etc., etc., etc. You have to decide what you need and want the receiver for (now and in the forseeable future), and make your own informed decision from that. I do not have hdmi/dvi/DL3, etc. But my 5803 sounds awesome w/ my 2900 and my Paradigms, and there is never any shortage of power.

Thanks...the 3805 doesn't have the hdmi/dvi either and I was ok with that...I just wasn't sure if there were any other important upgrades, etc. that have happened between the 5800 and 3805.

Like what? Again, you need to decide what you want and need in a receiver now, and in the forseeable future...and that will dictate what attributes you need. The 5800 is a fine receiver, although a little "dated." But that need not necessarily be a factor in your case. You also failed to mention 1) the price, and, 2) if it is new or used, and if so, how used. I would say if you could get it new (or almost) for under 1K that's a good deal for a great receiver if it's what you need.

The 5800 is a refurb for around $750, the 3805 is also a refurb for around $650.

I'm just asking for advice or comments as to some technology upgrades that might have occured between the 5800 and 3805...ones that I should maybe consider before purchasing one or the other. I'm sure BOTH will accomplish what I need TODAY, but as I build my HT system maybe one or the other will show its limitations...perhaps neither will. By technology standards, maybe both are already outdated...I don't really know.

Popular features on the 3805:
Auto setup/Room-Eq
Better bass management (non-upgraded 5800)
Video up-conversion
Dolby PLIIx
Denon link
Lip sync (necessary for non-CRT displays)

I'll be adding an HDMI switcher when I get to the point that it is necessary.

For the money, the 5800, the 5803, the 4802 IMHO are all better units than the 3805. Everything from the power supply, capacitors, heat sinks, transistors, etc... are all upgraded on those units. Those are flagship receivers.

The 5800 offers DTS ES Discrete 6.1 and DTS Neo 6 - which I prefer over Dolby's similar offerings. You also get THX certification, something the 3805 lacks for some reason.

The 3805 is no slouch, and is feature ridden. But when comparing the 4 and 5 series units, they are in a totally different league.

I own a 3805, and would have purchased the 4802 at the time but it was going for $1300, while my B stock unit was only $740.
