I am home theater newbie.

I am trying to set-up 5.1 system with my denon 4806 and def tech speakers.

Looking at the manual, my set-up looks like it is Surround B only setup. I went to the auto Auto Setup menu. In Extra set-up->Channel Set-up, I set the Surround B to ‘Used’ and Surround Back speakers to none. With this channel set-up, when I go to Power-Amp setup, I am not able to set the Surround A to None to make it Surround B only. My surround A is always set to Surr.A and Surround B is set to Suur.B and I cannot modify them. So, I left it as it was, and started the Auto setup. I heard the calibration tones in all the speakers and then got an error that says -> Surround A L/F : none and I don’t have an option to skip and proceed further. I don’t have any side surround speakers since mine is just a 5.1 set-up.

My questions is:

1. The manual says we can do a Surround B only setup. How do I do a 5.1 surround B only set-up?

2. For 5.1 set-up do I always have to use Surround A? If so, what is the purpose of Surround B only and A+B, as mentioned in the manual?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Arun

The Surround A setup is the primary setup for the primary(generally HT) 5.1 setup. Surround B can be used for secondary side surround along with Surround A or the primary surround for a secondary 5.1 setup (multichannel music). You cannot use B without an A assigned/hooked up. Surround A is considered the side surrounds in a 7.1 system and just surround in a 5.1 system. Hope this helps.
