Denon 4306 - Setup Help - No Audio HDMI

I did a search, and couldn't find anyone with the same problem, so here's my issue.

I have DirectTV HD DVR with HDMI out. I have HDMI going into the receiver and out HDMI to my Panasonic Plasma. I also have a PS3 going HDMI into the Denon.

I have setup in Video TV HDMI 1 and DVD (PS3) HDMI 3. The PS3 plays perfectly through the Denon receiver. However the TV signal only plays Video when switch to TV. I have to set the audio for HDMI 1 to TV and not AMP.

If I use RCA plugs and let the receiver convert it to HDMI out, I get sound.

I'm stumped.

As I recall, the 4306 doesn't pass audio through its HDMI output, only video.

Strange...because I'm getting audio and video from my PS3 when it plays a game and DVD and that is HDMI to HDMI.

Does the DVR have the capabilty to pass audio via HDMI? You may have to configure the DVR for this.

You recall it wrong, when you're assigning the HDMI INS, you have to determine/select if your HDMI OUT (audio) goes to AMP or TV.

I don't understand couple of your statements here -please clarify:
- With TV input selected you're not getting audio out on receiver/speakers or on TV, or nothing at all ?
- Did you select the Audio out as AMP or TV ?
(in the HDMI In assignment, manual - page 70)
Also, on page 71 it says that when "the monitor is not compatible w/HDMI audio signal playback, only the video signals are output to the monitor ..."

- Did you check with the STATUS button if you're sending the HDMI out signal in the correct mode ?
It should be HDMI not DVI

- How could you "convert" the RCA (analog) audio signal to the HDMI out signal ? It's simply not possible! (read manual page 71).
The only analog in->HDMI out conversion which 4306 does is in the video realm

Thanks....I'll answer these together. I have selected Audio out as "AMP". When I do this, there is no sound at all...neither the TV or my main speakers (which are Heresy III's...but I know that doesn't matter)

When I select "TV", the video is fine and the sound comes through the TV.

Conversely, when I switch to DVD (PS3), I select "TV" and the sound comes through the TV. When I select "AMP", the sound comes through the main speakers, center speaker and subwoofer. I don't have any rear speakers yet...the Heresy's and the Velodyne sub kinda killed me for a bit.

Hopefully, I'm answering this correctly. I'm not expecting audio through my monitor (Panasonic 42600U) when I have AMP selected for the audio. I'm not expecting audio to ever come through my monitor, only my main/sub/etc.

It does however come through my monitor via HDMI when I select "TV" for the audio on the HDMI setup screen for the Denon.

No. How would I do that? And what is that checking? That audio is coming from the DirectTV Receiver into the Amp?

I should have clarifed...I was checking the DirecTV receiver to the TV...

SOLVED!

On the remote in AMP mode, on the screen there is a TV INPUT button. When I hit it, it said EXT IN, I hit it again something else (I forget), I hit it again and it said: TV Auto....blam...sound finally came through HDMI.

Thanks to all those who offered advice.

Yeah, that's the one of the most common mistakes 4306 users do (judging by different Forums) - have it in the wrong Input Mode
To clarify: the button you mentioned is not called "TV INPUT", it's an "Input Mode" button which works for any source currently selected. While you press it it goes through the Modes cycle:
Auto->PCM->DTS->Analog->Ext.In
You can do the same with the three front display buttons on 4306.
It is always good idea to use just AUTO (by default), unless you really, specifically want to select some other mode (esp. analog, or Ext.In).

Glad it works now for you ;)
