denon 3910 playback problem

When I use this univeral player for 2 channel and multi-channel analog play all is well.
When I try to use the player's digital output (optical) to my Rotel RSP 1068 (pre/pro)...the 1068 takes a second to recognize the 44.1 hz signal...I see it's display change from 48 to 44.1 with a lag or break in the first second or so of the CD. There is a missing bar or two of music playback which is really annoying.
Rotel says the Denon is not flagging it's output with a 44.1k signal and that the Rotel has to read the output and then reset. Is there a set-up issue with the Denon that I have missed?

It sounds like the Rotel initially expects the signal to be 48 kHz and then sees the actual bitstream and realizes it is 44.1 kHz. If there is a setup issue it is with the Rotel and not likely the dvd player.

The explanation that the player is not 'flagging' the output as 44.1 makes no sense - that information as well as number of channels, bit depth, and more is part of the s/pdif data format.

I've never heard that explaination, but I have seen this issue before with a variety of gear. It is the combination of gear and how they communicate via digital that seems to cause the problem, though I haven't seen someone actually mention this issue in about a year. Have you tried it via analog? I'm going to pretty much guarantee that the problem won't exist on analog.

Oh, yes, your're right...definitely not an analog issue which I use mostly anyway. It reared it's ugly head as I was trying to compare the Denons DAC (analog) to the Rotel's using the digital output of the Denon.

My NAD 762 does the exact same thing, and I have fed it with digital outs from CD/DVD players made by Sony, Denon, and Pioneer. Oh...it also does the same thing when I feed it the digital out from my Apple TV.

You rarely notice it with DVD's, but its a PITA with non-live music CD's. There is no solution other than to use analogs, which is what I have done on the rare occasion I listen to music on my HT rig.

PS: If Rotel blames the Denon, it makes me wonder if a Rotel/Rotel combo would have the same issue. I do have a Rotel 1072 CD player, but it is not in my HT rack, so testing would be a bit of a PITA.

When I first encountered this it was with a Sony CD player and my previous Marantz receiver. I bought a Marantz CD player and the problem went away, however the CD player died in just a few months...the shop gave me a new Sony CD player and the problem came back. This seemed to be a common complaint and people had a variety of brands/models and at first it seemed to be Marantz related, though after a while it became clear that it was similar with other receiver manufacturers too and there was no one key factor. When the next models came out from Marantz I went and checked them out for this problem and found that some of the new models had all but eliminated this issue, which is why I bought my 8300 and with the same Sony player the problem more or less went away. So while it may be something the player does that creates the condition, it is really the receiver that isn't handling it adequately because Marantz essentially fixed it. I still have it happen once in a while (usually in DVD menus or the first track of a CD that has sound right when it starts), but it is extremely rare compared to before where it happened with nearly every disc.

I am using optical from the STB to the receiver. A similar switch happens in my receiver when going from channels with 2.0 audio to channels with 5.1 audio. The difference is, in my case, there is no sound until the switching process is complete. So it goes, 2.0 - silence - 5.1 or vice versa.

Is there a setting on the Rotel where you can tell it not to default to 48KHz?

As J_g suggested, I am using the 3910 over analog with no issues.

I second MDS's comment that its the receiver's fault.
