Denon 3910 Blacker than Black- Does it matter?

Hello- I have one of the early built Denon 3910's that does not pass "below black" and if paired w/a Sony SXRD, does it matter? I could send it to Denon to have the glitch fixed but I have heard that unless the TV it is hooked up to is CRT based that the display will not hold below black anyway. Should I be concerned w/ below black if I am confident I can still calibrate accurately w/ Avia or DVE?

Thanks!!

Have you tested it with DVE or Avia? How do you know it doesn't pass? I would say if you cal using one of those discs and it is able to meet all the calibration requirements, I wouldn't worry about it.

J Garcia- Yes I checked on DVE and the 3910 does not display the pluge or "Below black" bar. Also, I cannot see the Drop Shadow in the THX section of the Star Wars discs. This is a known problem of the early builds of the Denon 3910. I am now trying to determine if sending it to NJ for 3 weeks is worth it to get it to display blacker than black.

Isn't the upgrade free? Also wouldn't it add to its resale value if you ever thought about selling it?

Unfortunately, Denon identified the issue but will not release a firmware that the user can do it with. Denon says the player has to be sent to them for the BTB. It appears to have only been units produced Sept-November of 2004. My real debate is if BTB even matters assuming I am confident that I can set black level on DVE correctly. Isn't BTB really just there to give you a reference for calibration?

There was an interesting thread on this at AVS, should have bookmarked it.
In essence, the info below black is a region for signal buffer for mastering processing in case there is some drifting into that region. No real usable video is mastered there.
