Denon 3808 vs Pioneer 94TXH

I am newbie currently looking to get a new receiver for my home. I have been looking at the denon 3808 and the Pioneer 94TXH. Both have (4) 1.3 HDMI inputs and upscale to 1080p, and the options seem very similiar. The Pioneer is only THX Select certified, but the Denon does not have any certification at all. I have always had Pioneer products in the past without any issues. On this website and forum, I see very few comments on Pioneer receivers and many comments on the Denon.

I have a 1080p 58" plasma, and this will be used mostly for movies and Xbox 360 games (with composite, no HDMI). Would upscaling of the Xbox 360 to 1080p with these units cause any lag in the display? Is it possible to still run 1080i from the Xbox 360 through the receiver and then through the HDMI cable at 1080i?

I have seen a lot of good comments on Onkyo products, but my wife refuses to let me purchase an Onkyo. This is based on the name only, and there is no arguing with her, so any Onkyo is out.

If given the choice between the two receivers I would probably pick up the Denon based on previous experience.

Running your 360 to either receiver and having its image upscaled to 1080p should not cause any lag in the video. Also, you will be able to run components for the 360 to the receiver and then run one hdmi cable from the receiver to the display as these receivers will upconvert from component to hdmi and if you want you should be able to turn off the upscaling and leave the signal at whatever resolution you want.

Strange, I wonder why your wife has such hatred for Onkyo? Get an Integra DTR-7.8, she won't know the difference (unless she is knowledgeable about the force) Let's say she does know Integra is Onkyo and you get an Intrega and she gets mad, just tell her you did not know it was made by Onkyo.

All kidding aside either of these receivers would work fine for most any speakers. If you ever needed more power, unlikely, but you could always get an external amplifier and connect it to the preouts on either of these receivers.

What's in a name??? Bose sounds expensive, and it is! But nearly everyone on the planet knows they're cheap c**p! Notice I saidNEARLYeveryone! I understand making concessions as my wife and I do retaliatory spending on occasion. But if someone doesn't know what they're talking about then why listen?

To get the best picture quality from your xBox you need to use the Component connection like this, Xbox360 Component HD Cable. Then, through the receiver you can upconvert the signal to HDMI.

Depending on the input resolution, you can also choose to upscale so that all signals are output at 1080p.

hey! bose has a good sound there just over priced... id rather go with denon cause they primarily make receivers as pioneer makes a variety of products.. plus i think denons been around longer and is a leader in technologies

Yes, running you xbox through your receiver will induce lag. It's best to hook your xbox directly to your TV, and then to an input, if possible, that has a strait though connection that by-passes any video processing that is built into the TV. I know Panasonic makes a TV with this by-pass connection.

I know, that's not what I wanted to hear either. I wanted the receiver to do all the switching to reduce confusion or less steps to go from one mode to the next.

I just bought a Denon 3808ci. I'm still working on getting is set-up, but so far I can tell that I'm going to be very pleased with this unit.

I bet she hasn't heard of Krell either, but clearly it is not crap. Just have her visit Onkyo and Integra's websites so she can see it isn't "crap" and a no name. Next time she wants to buy some expensive clothes, jewelry, or something, tell her she can't have it, because you have never heard of the brand.

I went with Pioneer

I was also considering both. I originally was planning on the Denon 3808 and would have purchased one if the local BB/Magnolia had one. After I got home from vacation I did a bit more research (at AV Science Forums) and kept reading about bugs in the 3808. In fact, there is a long thread dedicated to bugs in the 3808 and 4808. Also being a relative newby, I was concerned when I read complaints about Denon's skimpy manual. I need a good manual!!. Anyway, I went ahead and purchased the Pioneer Elite 94txh. I set it up yesterday and really like it.

Like it's been said both recievers will do the job but for me it is all about listening with my own ears.I looked at alot of different recievers and both Pioneer and Denon make good products that can be used in a variety of HTR's. But they sound different to different people and in different environments. Do yourself a favor and go out and listen to as many as you can and notice how they are set up and what type of environment they are in. I like alot of different recievers as far as sound but then you want to check out the options and controls , remotes,etc. I have the Pioneer but it just was because I liked the sound and you may not so take your time and get what you want and like. You will get good info here to help make your decision but know one knows better what sounds good to you than you. Good Luck.

Both recievers likely sound the same if they are set up the same and are in the same listening room; dont get to "caught up in this". Get the one that has the features you want and if they both have this, get the cheapest one.
