Analog HDMI

To answer the first question, the new Denon has the ability to input analog video signals (composite video, S-video, conponent video) and output them over the HDMI connection. This wont necessarily improve the picture quality of the S-video signal from your VCR, but it will allow you to have a single HDMI connection from the receiver to the TV.

The new Yamaha RX-V2600 and 1600 also have this feature.

Is this not the same as upconversion?

Or does upconversion improve video signals?

Denon just updated their website. Denon

Compare the 3806 to the 3805. To me it looks like the only things of significance the 3806 has are the HDMI inputs/output, 120w/ch vs 110w/ch, and the 3806 comes with the $65 mic. The price difference is $400-$500+. HDMI is cool, but everything I read says good a good component connection is just as good. Very similar to optical vs coax audio.

The Yamaha RX-V2600 is somewhat unique in that it upconverts video to HDMI, but also scales it to either 720p or 1080i as desired - with HDCP intact. And since it's HDMI 1.1 it also passes audio including DVD-Audio.

The UK/Euro version does. :D According to posters at AVS Forum who went to CEDIA the US version will also have it.

I stand corrected if this true, and I hope it is. It would be short-sighted and a mistake on Denon's part if they left out this feature. It looks like they may be playing catch up with the Yamaha. If they could get HDMI 1.2 in before product release, that might be a feather in their cap.

It surprised me when it was first spotted. The manual for the UK/Euro version is available to download from Denon Germany if you want a closer look at it. Be warned it's 20 megs.

According to the manual it also has Independant Crossovers for speakers, Input Level Adjustment and Input Renaming. You can also set up the Stereo/Direct Mode with different speaker sizes, channel levels, delay times etc.
