Denon 3806 vs Pioneer VSX 72

Any help appreciated...

Trying to build a system around Canton LE 202 bookshelf speakers and possibly an AS25 sub. What cables should I use? And what receiver to look at? The Denon 3806 goes for around 1000 USD, the Pioneer for close to 800. I like both receivers but can't appreciate any real dramatic difference...

And, would the Cantons work well with either receiver? I like their airy bright sound, but would not want them to sound any thinner; but not mid-heavy either.

A friend bought the 74 Pio after comparing it to the Denon 3806. He said it sounded almost identical, but opted for the Pioneer based on his love for the Pioneer looks, dvd players, and plasma (everything had to match). Either is a great unit, but I think he got the 74 for around a grand via internet.
