Denon 3806 Deal at Second Act

This a great deal for a 3806-they are listed as refurbs but are actually new, A-stock units (I confirmed this with the sales person over the phone when I inquired about the presence of the calibration mike). Second Act is also an authorized Denon etailer and have great customer service. They had a 3910 for a few days as well, so keep your eyes peeled.

How are refurbished units sold as "A" stock? And if they are truely brand new "A" stock, why bother selling them as refurbs? Denon only gives 90 day warranties on units that have been refurbished or B stock, so I've got to believe these units have been returned and repaired with a 90 day warranty. Sales people have been known to lie to get a sale. ;)

Nonetheless, it's a fair buy at $840 shipped. I'd check Dakmart though, because they're the only ones that include a full year warranty on their Denon B stock/refurbished units.

Ubid is carrying the same refurbished unit for $750 plus $40 s/h with a 90 day warranty.

I think Secondact can only sell "refurbished" units, but the salesman told me that they had purchased a large number of A stock receivers. Whether or not they are covered by a new warranty is TBD-I have a call into Denon to determine the warranty for the unit (which is probably based on the serial number). I have one of the SecondAct units as well as a true refurb from Ubid, and the packaging is totally different-Ubid's came in a generic box with generic packing, while the Secondact unit came in a new 3806 box (that looked to have never been opened), with all the packing and such that one would expect with a brand new unit. The SecondAct unit also did not have a refurb serial number like the one I got from Ubid. I too was skeptical until I saw the differences myself.

Why would you buy two units? Seems like a waste of return shipping to Ubid, and a loss of $40 if you keep the 2nd Act unit. Was there something wrong with the Ubid unit that made you purchase a second from another etailer?

That's an $80 net loss on a 90 day product - new or refurbished. I hope you're right and you get a new warranty on a product labelled refurbished and quoted as having a 90 day warranty in black in white. If it sounds too good to be true...

I hve three a/v zones and decided that two receivers would be better and cheaper for me than a large multizone receiver like the 4806 or 5805. As for my purchases, these receivers were hard to find a month or so ago, so I bought them when they showed up on their respective sites. (The Ubid one was actually eCost-I forgot that my 3910 came from Ubid). The net cost difference between the two for me was $40, incuding tax and shipping (I had to pay tax on the eCost one). BTW, I didn't buy the 2nd Act refurb unit because it was asserted to be A stock-it was the only one available for near that price at the time I purchased it, and I thought it was a nice surprise that it could be A stock, even if it was only covered for 90 days. Sorry to offend your financial sensibilities with my tip-I won't bother listing any more in the future.

A couple more items of info: the Second Act unit came with a standard warranty sheet (listing the warranty as 2 years), whereas the eCost unit came with a B stock 90 day warranty sheet (as did my Ubid 3910). I just opened the Second Act unit this morning, and it looked like it had not been touched since it left the factory-the receiver was wrapped in a white padded plastic sheet, the little piece of tape ws still on the drop down front door, all the original pre-formed styrofoam packing materials were there, and the accessories were taped down and in perfect condition. The eCost unit, OTOH, was in a big plastic bag, had generic padding around the receiver, had several minor scratches on the top and rear of the unit, accessories were thrown in another bag, and the manual was dirty-it had obviously been a used unit that had been "reconditioned" (BTW, my Ubid 3910 was in essentially the same condition, and it looked like someone had played Mumbeldy-peg with the remote). You may draw your own conclusions as to the veracity of the Second Act salesman's assertion, but the data is fairly compelling, IMHO. I will be calling Denon and Second Act today to determine the length of warranty that I will actually get with this unit, but the difference in appearance was worth the difference in price to me. BTW, I did not buy the 2nd Act unit based on the fact that it could be an A stock unit-I found this out after I had already placed my order and called them on an unrelated question (they called me back within an hour). Oh, I almost forgot-the first unit I got from Second Act arrived with a dented faceplate (courtesy of UPS). Second Act was very efficient with the exchange-after I contacted them about the damage (I didn't find the damage until I had opened the box), they sent a call tag for the damaged unit and shipped a second unit out the next day.

Easy there, fox. I wasn't ripping you a new one. I just wanted to make sure people weren't under the assumption they were getting new stock with a new warranty when it was clearly listed as B stock and 90 days. Your post was a bit misleading (and if it wasn't, their website is). We're all anxious to see if they are using wool to fool everyone and sell new full warranted units. If that is so, I'm sure they'll sell out very quickly at that price.

I bought a B stock 3805 from Ubid. It arrived in a Denon box, marked B stock, in plastic with tape on the door, all in styrofoam, with a somewhat "used" manual and an older black remote in plastic (with batteries). The box definitely looked like a return, but there were no scratches on the unit anywhere, no dings, etc... It appeared someone at Denon really revamped it if it did have a problem, and even used new screws to reassemble it if it was disassembled.

It came with a 90 day warranty, but I've returned the remote 2x for new ones well past the 90 day experation date. Denon never batted an eye when I mailed the old remote back. They didn't even ask for proof of purchase (I did pre-call). I rank them up there with HK as far as service goes. Same goes with Ubid. They bent over backwards for me when I had remote issues.

The money you save on B stock gives you enough insurance cash to get the unit shipped and repaired 1x - should you need to service it after 90 days. I think it's well worth it to purchase B stock.

fox - thanks for the link. I've not heard of that site, and I'm sure they're reputable to be a Denon B stock dealer. Good luck with your units, and keep us updated on the warranty reply.

Sorry-I was having a bad hair day. I knew your intentions were good-after all, you are rooting for the right football team! BTW, I still don't know what the warranty length is, but I am hopeful that it will be covered for the full duration since there is no mention of a 90 day warranty in the paperwork in the box. If it is not, I am no worse off than I would have been with a true refurb from a warranty standpoint. I have to say that the 2nd Act salesperon seemed very nice and upfront, but I neglected to ask about the warranty when I got the info on the pedigree of the units. He did tell me that most of their stuff is true B stock, but that they got a good deal on the 3806 units. It is possible that they are not allowed to offer A stock items because they are only authorized for refurbs, but that is speculation on my part. I also got the impression that they were a new player with Denon, since he was surprised when I told him of the much larger list of refubs on their competitor's site. Shortly after, the 3910 appeared, but they sold out before I could get one.

I am glad to hear of your positive experiences with Denon and Ubid-I have not had occasion to use Denon's CS for my other stuff (DVD-2900, DRM-740 cassette deck), but I may test the waters with the 3910 remote-it is pretty ugly with all the scratches and scuffs. BTW, what problem did you have with your 3805 remote, or was yours a "cosmetic" failure? On a related note, I am unimpressed with the 3806 remote-it is hard to see the buttons on the B&W LCD screen, so I a probably going to replace it with a universal HT remote like the Harmony or other similar remote.

On a more important note, my BGSU tiks check cleared, so I am in the lottery for the UM game tiks, which I promised my wife I would get for her last Christmas. I already have our hotel reservations, so I hope I don't need to go to a broker for the tickets-that will cost more than both of my 3806es! We lucked out and got the Texas tickets last year-other than the ending, it was a very memorable game in all respects.

My first remote was fine, but it was the older version (black foil, not newer like yours). People said the silver remote with the blue face was easier to see, so they swapped it out for me. They sent me one with a hairline crack, almost impossible to see, and it worked fine. About a year later, after the kids sitting on it on the couch, it developed a few more cracks. Finally a small chunk fell off the back. I thought I'd give them a call and see what they'd say. "Ship it back, we'll send a new one." They did, and it looked brand new. My only complaint on their full foil remotes are they go through batteries pretty quickly if you don't keep them out of reach, because they turn on as soon as they're bumped.

My friend lives in Dallas, and has tickets to the UT game. We usually scalp tix to the home games, or hang out on campus and watch the games on the big-tron outdoor sets (is that what they call them?). Hopefully Tressel has a championship team this year.

This is the newer one for the 3805:

Message received and acknowledged-I will drink less coffee and take my Prozac before I fire off my next riposte.

Hey, Hawk is gone, but hope always springs eternal at the 'Shoe, especially before the first game. I just hope they don't get the SI No. 1 ranking kiss of death this year as has been rumored. :p

At the risk of opening the flood gates, I have new info on the SecondAct 3806 units. CS confirmed that they are A stock with full 2 year parts/1 year labor warranties. They also confirmed that they cannot advertise them as A stock because of their relationship with Denon as a B stock vendor, as I had speculated. I got a detailed email response but hesitate to quote it directly for fear that it would get SecondAct in trouble with Denon, but since I already have a 3806 with the pertinent paperwork, these two data points are extremely compelling.

This is clearly the best deal going for this unit: A stock with a full warranty from an authorized dealer for $840 shipped. Get them while they last (which will probably not be too much longer!).

Can anyone verify if this is still the case with the A stock receivers at SecondAct? I sent an email inquiring, but wouldnt give me any information about it

Greetings, has anybody seen any deals on the 3806 in Canada?

The boxing week sales have a local dealer selling them at $1177 CND !

Maybe I'll just drive 30 minutes across the border and purchase it in the U.S,

although I doubt Denon will honour the warranty. Anyone have suggestions

for stores I can check out in the Buffalo, NY area? Much obliged.

Happy New Year
