Hi all,

back again after a while out.
Would like to inform that I've upgraded my receiver (from a Denon 2803 to a brand new 3805). I've got it at Tweeter, @ 800 cash, including taxes and warranty. I've sold the 2803 to a friend of mine @ 500, so I just spend $ 300 myself.

I had the opportunity to perform an A/B test (Yammie 2500 against the 3805) and the 3805 was clearly the winner. Really happy with it.
Don't know why the Yammie gets too hot (after 40 mins. of continuous testings, I had the impression that I could fry an egg over the 2500. In other had the 3805 was running at normal temperature).

Have been tweaking all the weekend, in order to get familiar with the new baby.

What a difference in terms of punch! The pure direct is fantastic.
The power difference ( 30 + watts/channel) also makes the speakers to perform a whole lot better.

After performing the auto set up (with a Shure microphone), the results were good, but not the way I thought.

I'd like to clarify something I've done, in order to cross-check data, as the manual doesn't say anything on this subject:

at the Auto Set Up / Room EQ window, when you scroll down item 5 (Mic Input Select), you'll find 2 setting options ( MIC and V. AUX L ).

I do have the digital Rat Shack SPL, wich has an RCA out, so I plugged a cable from it, till the V. AUX L and everything worked just fine!

Don't know why they doesn't say this in the catalogue... My question is if those readings (SPL / V.AUX L) are as reliable as thru the SET UP MIC instead?

Any comments will be much appreciated.

Cheers / Avliner.

Great price on a 3805 especially from tweeter. I really enjoy mine.

Remember. To get absolute "pure direct mode", you need to set the subwoofer setting to none. Otherwise the bass management circuitry is still on even if your front speakers are set to large

Thanks for the above tip. Will do that tonite to see how it performs.

By the way,do you have an idea about the auto set up I've done;I mean, without the Denon mike, with RS SPL instead?

I have no clue. I used the denon mic to auto eq my speakers and did not like the sound. So I disabled the eq and set all my speakers to large.

This gave the best sound for my particular setup.

I wish denon did not output to the sub in pure direct mode with large front speakers.

For Pure Direct mode the Denon's generate an Analogue filtered signal for the SW output. The Bass Management settings (Large/Small etc) are bypassed. Info here about what it does with an analogue signal:-

Quote from Denon:

"Stereo with an analogue input, stays analogue as it passes through an analogue High-Pass Filter (if the speakers are configured to small) while a seperate but parallel signal goes to the DSP for Low-Pass filtering. In DIRECT Mode the Hi-Pass Filter is bypassed, while the digital Low-Pass is still active. In PURE DIRECT Mode, both the analogue High-Pass and digital Low-Pass are bypassed, however an analogue Low-Pass takes over, so in PURE DIRECT it is 100% analogue"

If the signal is digital then the Amp doubles up the DAC's to four for each channel in Pure Direct mode. Bass management (Large/Small etc) is still bypassed as are all Tone Controls, Video Circuits.

You don't need to set the Sub to None in the main setup screen. Just go into the individual channel levels settings for Pure Direct/Direct and lower the SW channel to -12db then OFF.

Hmm have to check the reciever again. The notes on pg 66 of the manual are a little vague. Will have to experiment tonight.

As per my previous thread above, is there any other information/advise regarding to the use of a RS Digital SPL connected directly to the receiver?
I've heard that the Rat Shack SPL is not so accurate and there's a correction table to be used as well.

Any comments on this regard will be appreciated.

The RS meter is only inaccurate at the lowest frequencies and if you want a correction chart go to http://www.svsubwoofers.com. On average it is off by 2-3 dB at the lowest frequencies but for the purposes of calibrating your system is plenty good enough. The point is that it is repeatable. Only if you want to plot an exact frequency vs amplitude chart for your room would you need to apply the correction factors or buy a much more expensive (and hence more accurate) SPL meter.
