Denon 3805 vs Onkyo TX-SR701

I would have thought that someone would have started a thread like this, before now!

Both of these receivers as well as the company themself seem to be very highly regarded among audiophiles, both end users and reviewers.

So, what do yall think?

The Denon would be my choice if money were no object, but the Onkyo seems to offer "about the same" for several hundred $ less.

Neither one has FireWire for SACD and DVA-A.

The Onkyo is THX rated, but the Denon actually has more power.

The Denon has a propritary digital SACD and DVD-A inuput (denon link), but to use it, you need to purchase one of the more expensive denon DVD players. To me, a high end receiver IS worth it, but I question the benefit or value of a 600$ DVD player vs a 150-200 DVD player.

The Onkyo has sound matching for the different inputs.

My feeling, is that, while they are both getting very high recommendations, if someone were to give me one, at no cost, I would choose the Denon.

However, if I had to purchase one, while I like the Denon, I would lean towards the Onkyo.

So, what do yall think?

Nothing really too add

Just that I'm facing almost the same dilemma, except between the 2805 and the 801 as opposed to the 701.

Curious, why aren't you considering the 3805 over the 2805 (the same reason why the 701 and not the 801)?

Sorry - misread your thread

Why do you like the 3805 over the 2805? Wouldn't the latter help your decision against the 701?

I one the onkyo 801 very nice. What Iwould sugest is that you listen to the denon and the onkyo. The have a different sound. The onkyo IMO has a clean
sound while the dennon is more....or less detailed sounding it is hard to say in words. It comes down to prefrence. look at the features and the sound most of all. and what things you plan to connect to it in the future. another thing to remember is the next latest thing will be out in the next 6 months and then the prices drop again.

Note. I had the Yamaha RXV-1000 and upgraded to the RXV-2400 (With YPO)
What a joke THEIR WAS NO SOUND DIFFERENCE (SONIC SIGNITURE WAS THE SAME!) So as long as you buy onkyo it will sound like onkyo vise versa Denon
2805 3805 .... just more features and at some times at the expense of sound quality

The Yamaha 1400(2400) is a very sound unit. I almost bought the Onkyo 901 and am glad I didnt.

3805 vs 2805 vs 801 vs 5790

I too was looking at both of the dennons, as well as a Yammi 5790 and the Onkyo 801. IMHO, unless you really need the power, or have the extra cash, the 2805 is a much better buy than the 3805. I didn't feel like paying $300 more for 20 watts per channel and the remote - plus the 2805 comes with the microphone while you have to dish out another $60 for it if u buy the 3805. The 2805 has plenty of power to drive my Klipch speakers.

I listened to the Onkyo 801, but it seemed a little thin sounding. The Yamaha sounds very precise, but is a little bright for my tastes and doesn't have the same punch as the Dennon in the bass department. If it matches well with your speakers, I think it may be a better buy than the Dennon. Especially if you watch more movies than listen to two channel music.

I went with the Dennon 2805 - bought it two days ago at Tweeter after much agonizing. I love it though. It was the warmest and fullest sounding of the amps I looked at (with the exception of the 3805, which has an identical sound - just more power).

I just wanted to thank they guys at Audioholics - Clint's review of the 3805 weighed heavily on my decision, and my lurking in the forums also helped.

Sorry that I do not have the URL, but I read somewhere that Onkyo will be coming out with new models, the 602, 702, 802 soon.
