Denon 3805 vs Denon 2805

What are the important differences if any between these two? I read the brochure (pdf) and other then a little more wattage, whats the difference that matters? In other words, why should one purchase the 3805 over the 2805?

If you have the 3805 and your friend has a 2805, you've got bragging rights. If your friend has a 2805 and you have a 3805, your friend has more money for dvd's and cd's. Both of these receivers are loaded with all the bells and whistles you could want. For movies I doubt you would be able to tell a difference in sound. I suspect that where the 3805 will be better would be in 2 channel music. If this is the last piece to your set up, get the 3805. If it isn't, get the 2805 and use the money you saved for your next piece. If this advice doesn't help, flip a coin, either way you will be getting a great receiver.

This thread topic is the number one most asked question on every forum I read. If you do a search here, at avsforum, and secrets forum you will get enough hits to keep you busy reading for days.

There should be an FAQ with this question at position 1.

Really? I read the sticky, searched 5 pages on in the AMP section and came up with squat. After 5 pages of slow loading I gave up. Haven't ever seen the other forums you mention nor do I really need another one to investigate, one audio forum is enough for me so whether they have it highlighted a thousand times has nothing to do with the sticky, lets just stick to this forum with the comment about repetitive posts.

I did rephrase my search and you are quite correct. There was enough information although some of it with abreviations that I know have to go figure out what they mean. Thanks much for getting me straightened out. This site manipulates a little different then another forum I have invested a little time in (DPReview).

I in no way meant to sound harsh, just wanted to give some pointers on where to go for ALOT of information. I don't even own a Denon, but have read the manuals on-line and read alot about them on various forums and feel like I do know a little about them just from reading.

try http://www.avsforum.com in the amps, receivers, processors area and do the same search and you can read for days to help make up your mind.

I pondered over this myself......


3805 advantages:

The 3805 has 192kHz DAC's vs. the 96kHz DAC's in the 2805 (Both Burr-Brown 24 bit).
The 3805 has 20 more Watts per Channel
The 3805 has Dennon Link
The 3805 has an LCD remote.

2805 advantages:

It comes with the setup microphone (costs $45 to buy for the 3805)
It is $300 cheaper.


I picked the 2805 for the following reasons:

In my opinion, the WPC difference is negligible.
I could not tell an audible difference between the two and wonder if the DAC's make a difference.
If you are planning on buying a higher-end Dennon brand DVD video/audio/SA player then the Dennon link is important - otherwise it is useless.
I didn't like the Dennon LCD remote, although some really do.

The only thing that really bothered me about the differences between the two was the difference in the DAC's.

Your kind of singing my song. I don't like LCD remotes either. I care little about all the DSP modes a AVR has to offer as there are but a couple I use and one reason I like the Denon's over my Yamaha RX-1. I am actually looking at the Denon for someone else (sister in law). They will have a Denon DVD player. What does the Denon link do? What benefit is a faster DAC especially if you listen to both and can't decipher the difference? I will check the link offered by "unregistered". He was quite correct about the amount of information available here on these two AVR's in particular. At this point I'm considering they get the following items. Denon 2805, Definitive 10B's, Definitive Super Cube I, (a sub woofer) and maybe Definitive 4B's for the surrounds. The system will be 5.1.. The only other thing I might consider for them are Axiom's M60's (comparable cost) but have yet to listen to a pair as there are no showrooms but they seem to come highly recommended here.

Speaker Switching

Another thing is the speaker switching. You can set up two sets of surrounds, Dipole/Bipole for movies and Direct speakers for SACD, DVD- Audio listening. Basicly the 3805 has speaker switching between "surrounds (A) and (B)", and the 2805 has "Fronts (A) or (B)". This might not matter to you, but just something else to consider.
