Denon 3805 vs. 3806 and HDMI

Hey guys it's been a while since I've posted here but I trust you all a lot when it comes to AV questions. I have the opportunity go get a used 3806 on the cheap and would just resell my 3805. I'm sure there are a lot of similarities between the two and the main reason of updgrading is the HDMI switching on the 3806. Will the 3806 handle a 1080P signal? At the moment I'm looking at the Sony 60" SXRD that will accept a 1080P input. If this receiver can't handle it I'll just pass and wait for the next generation. I use the 3805 to switch component video and would like to continue to use that feature if I upgrade my TV.

Are there any other issues or reasons not to buy a 3806?

And does this upconvert everything to 1080P? Or upconvert everything below 1080i to 1080i over HDMI?

Thanks in advance.

The 4306 supports 1080p throughput, ie, passive. It can be set to upconvert to 1080i.

Which I assume applies to the 3806.

So HDMI will transport 480i/480P/1080i?

Yes. My cable box is HDMI and transmits all of those resolutions. It is handy for making crappy upconversions less harsh, and for making 1080i signals look fantastic.:D

Thanks. So I'm confused. Will it up convert 480i/480P to 1080i via HDMI?

Can you use the metal mic from a 3805 with the EQ in place of the plastic mic from the 3806?

Keep in mind you need a cable box that will allow you to pass the hdmi signal through the receiver. I have yet to have Cox resolve this issue for me. My cable goes to the TV direct. It sucks. But the 3806 will pass 1080p via component video to hdmi but will only upconvert to 1080i.

Audyssey does NOT recommend using anything other than the plastic mic as this is what their calibration is based on.

I have DirecTV and an HR10-250 although I'll be buying three HR20's as soon as OTD HD is activated. Are there any known issues passing their signal through the receiver?

I figured they would say that about the mic but if I get this receiver I'll contact Denon on that one to make sure. I bought the mic for my 3805 (waste of money but I only paid $40) and I read that the newer mics are plastic and not as nice.

The 3806 will passthrough 1080P via HDMI. It has analog to HDMI conversion but with no scaling or deinterlacing so you'll get 480i analog in, 480i HDMI out, 480p analog in, 480p HDMI out, 720p analog in, 720p HDMI out etc etc. The output resolution will always be the same as the input resolution. The next model up (AVR4306) does have scaling and deinterlacing, albeit up to a maximum of 1080i (output via HDMI).

If you're after 1080P scaling from analog sources to HDMI then you need to move up to the 4806CI or 5805CI.

I didn't get it

Thanks for your help but I didn't get it. There was a 3806 posted on my local craigslist for $500 from a local custom installer and I jumped on it immediately. So did others and after several emails back and forth the price went up to $700 and if I wanted it I could have it for $750. Probably still a good deal but I hate it when guys use craigslist for a bidding war. It's not the end of the world and Dakmart already has them already listed for $829.
