Ok I've settled on buying the Denon 3805....Now where can I get it at the best price from an authorized online dealer? And whats the difference between 'refurbished', 'factory reconditioned', and 'B-stock'? Or are they all the same?
Also do I need to but the set-up mic?
This is all Denon is saying about authorized dealers:
"WARRANTY
WARNING TO VALUED CONSUMERS:
The warranty on DENON Electronics products is NOT VALID if the products have been purchased from an unauthorized dealer/on-line E-tailer or if the original factory serial number has been removed, defaced or replaced in any way. Recently DENON Electronics has become aware of numerous instances in which such serial number tampering has occurred. Unauthorized dealers/on-line E-tailers and/or their suppliers frequently alter the serial numbers in an effort to prevent manufacturers from tracing the supplier source. DENON Electronics sell products through authorized retail and on-line channels to insure that consumers obtain quality pre-sale and after-sale support and service. PROTECT YOUR WARRANTY. Buy from an authorized DENON Electronics dealer/E-tailer. Check the unit and its packaging to determine whether the factory serial number may have been altered. To check to see if your dealer is an authorized dealer click here or if in doubt, call DENON Electronics at (973) 396-0810. For warranty terms and conditions on New or Refurbished equipment, please select the appropriate product type."
It appears you'll need to call Denon to see if an online Etailer is actually an authorized dealer or not. Their older website actually showed which online dealers were authorized. Refurb and factory reconditioned mean the units had problems, and were serviced. "B" stock could mean the above, as well as units that have been set aside or dumped to make room for new models. My rule of thumb is that if you can save at least $200 on a "B" stock unit from a reputable source with at least a 90 day warranty, it's probably worth it.
Figure $25 shipping to service an out of warranty unit, along with a 2 hour service charge at $60 an hour, plus parts. Parts are generally cheap. IE...A toroidal transformer for this unit should run ~$20.
These units will normally display any issues within three months of use. If you go three months without a hitch, you're most likely safe. Just remember to keep your unit well ventilated, and check the receiver for excessive heat when driving it hard for an extended period of time. If you push the unit, make sure to keep the tone controls flat. Don't boost the bass and treble. You'll protect your receiver, as well as your speakers.
