Denon 3805 on-screen display?

I purchased a Denon AVR-3805 yesterday, called in sick today, and spent all day playing with my new toy. And let me tell you, everything I read about the user's manual is right on! I've never seen such an untelligible mess. I think I've muddled through most of the set-up procedure, using the display on the front of the unit. Popped in Spiderman just to check out the sound and ended up watching the whole thing, giggling every time the sound almost knocked me off of the sofa.

My problem is that I have yet to figure out how to get the on-screen display up and running. I have an S-video cable running from the monitor out on the back of the unit to my Mits HD, but the menu never seems to show up. The manual doesn't seem to mention anything about this particular connection. Help!

If I understand your problem correctly, the Denon's On Screen Displays only overlay on S-Video or composite. If you're viewing your DVD player through your component input, you won't see the OSD. That's an annoyance on the 3805 that doesn't get fixed until the succeeding models. I know this isn't the answer you were looking for.

Are you talking about a component cable running from the DVD through the 3805? I actually have it going straight to the TV. What can I do to get the OSD working long enough to tweak the set up? I'm not even sure if I'm using the right connection for the display!

use the "to monitor" component cable plugs on the upper back left of the receiver. select amp on the 3805's remote then press setup. make sure the tv is on the right aux channel for the plugs you use on it. the tv remote should have a video/tv button that will allow you to cycle though the aux channels.

Gates....what other source devices do you have hooked up to your receiver...e.g..vcr....dig cable box...etc? You must have an s-video or composite hooked up for one of those I imagine...right? Just change your imput to either of those and you should be able to bring it up then.

If by chance you dont have any hooked up....you'll need to run some sort of monitor out line either s-video or composite to your tv from the receiver and that will allow you to bring it up on screen...hope this helps. pm me if you have any other questions and I'll just give you my cell#...it's alot easier to just talk you through it.:)

There are two ways to access any OSD. One method is to connect video out from your receiver via a single composite video cable to your TV. Turn your TV to that input, and viola!! The downside being that you have to change your TV input to that source everytime you want to access your user menu.

If you use your receiver to switch your various video sources, then the display will override whatever you're watching when you press the menu button. For example, I run my DVD video through my receiver, so if I want to access my OSD while watching a movie, I just press menu and it pops up.

Good luck...

I do as well Buckeye....you just have to run extra cables (little extra cash)...but its worth it to me and I wont do it any other way...because my wife wants it to be easy to use.....and that would frustrate her

OSD in Progressive Scan

Hi folks,

I do have a question regarding to the OSD on the 3805.
I've changed my TV set recently (from an old 34" CRT to a 42" LCD HDTV) and something weird is happening now, regarding to the OSD:

the VOLUME CONTROL does not appear anymore (it did before).

I'm running component cables (from dvd to receiver to tv) + S-video from monitor out to TV input, in order to get the OSD running (as before). The only difference now is that I've set my DVD on PROGRESSIVE SCAN and everything shows up normally (as before), EXCEPT the volume control. Weird, isn't??

Could you guys fire up some comments on that, please?

Cheers / Avliner.
