i have the 3805 and i get on screen display with my up converted video inputs.when i put on a true component input i get the onscreen display for about 1/2 a second and it goes off and wont stay on.i have the dbs input for my satelite using s video cable and dvd and xbox hooked up with component cables and all are output with the one component cable to the tv.the dbs input is the one that gives me my onscreen display.i asked the dealer if this is normal and he said he would look into it. i just want to know if this is the way it is supposed to work or is their something wrong?any advice would be appreciated.

If you have your component video settings for DBS set to auto you should see on screen menus briefly when you change volume. You should also see the on screen setup menu displayed on the TV in a ghosted white image with the TV picture still visible. When in setup mode it should stay on screen until you exit out of setup.

I have the exct same prob with the 2805. On screen works with up conversion, but when I have a pure component input I do not get OSD. Any solutions?

You can't get on screen menus with the TV picture still visible when using component inputs. The Denon manual talks about this but I can't remember what page it's on.

However, when using component connections you should still be able to see on screen menus when you enter setup mode but the picture will dissapear and the TV screen will change to a black back ground with white lettering.

i went to the dealer and it wont work with my tv.the tv wont lock on to the onscreen display.it will show the onscreen display for the component inputs on a diffrent video input on my tv even though there is nothing hooked up to that input on my tv.this has me baffled and i find it very strange. my dealer said that the tv i have is very finnacky with these kinda things and he has seen it before.it is a samsung widescreen tv 30".

Can you describe in detail your cabling connections for both the TV and receiver? How do you have the TV setup?

the only cable i have going to my tv is the component out from my denon to the component in 1 on my samsung tv.all my video goes through this way,but my onscreen display comes out on my video 2 input on my samsung and i dont even have any connection whatsoever to that input.however all my video is visable on component 1 minus my onscreen display and all my onscreen display is visable on video input 2 minus my video.the only onscreen display that i get that comes out with my video is the upconverted input from my satelite which is displayed on component 1 of my tv.this is satelite into denon dbs input(s video)upconverted to component out on denon and out to component 1 on tv. all my connections are correct and all my settings are too.my dvd and xbox are connected to component 1 & 2 on the denon and output the component to component 1 on the tv aswell.the dvd and xbox are not giving me onscreen display like my satelite is.this is strange and i never seen anything like it before.the tv i have is a samsung 30" widescreen hdtv.if anyone has a solution or similar problem im interested in your feedback.thanks in advance.

mike 07,

I basically have the same issue. And like I stated previously you can not get on screen setup menus with video through a component connection. I have S Video from my SAT to the receiver. When I am watching TV (Sat) I can get on screen menus while I am watching TV. This is because I have my receiver set to "Auto" for my video inputs. The receiver is up converting the S Video signal to component video.

However, when I am watching a DVD (which I have connected to my receiver through component connections and I have my Video input for DVD set to "Component", I get no on screen menus with the exception of "System Setup", Surround Parameters" and "On Screen" menus.

If I set my Video input on the Denon to "Auto" for my DVD I can see on screen menus while watching DVDs. BUT... the only reason that I can see these menus is because I also have the DVD player connected to the receiver with S Video and Component Video. If I disconnet my S Video connection (leaving only the component inputs connected) I only see on screen menus in the cases stated in the above paragraph.

Read the note on page 49 of the Denon 3805 manual at the very bottom of the page. It states:

"When a component video signal is input and when the "Video Input Mode" is set to the component fixed mode at input setup, the on-screen display is only displayed when the System Setup , Surround Parameters and On Screen buttons are operated."

Also check out the table on page 100 of the manual.

Hope that answers your questions. Let me know if that clarifys things for you.

on component i cant even get the setup display to come on the screen unless i switch over to video 2 on my tv(which nothing is even hooked up to).even with the dvd source not playing i get a flicker of display for a 1/2 second and then it wont stay on.my tv wont lock on to the display.i do have everything setup on my denon the way i want it so its not absolutely necessary to have the display, but it would be nice.(especially for how much i payed for it) i appreciate your help on this issue.i pretty much tried your advice through the manual but i think its just the tv.

Maybe you could try a different TV. Do you have the TV setup assigned to the correct Video Input?

I don't have any experience with Denon in particular but from what has been described it really seems to me that the problem is with the tv.

Many tvs have shared video inputs and using one disables the other. For example, some have both composite and s-video labeled video1. You can use either s-video or composite but not both. When you say you see the input when select video 2 even with nothing connected, I wonder if it is a similar situation; like if you use s-video on video1 then you must use s-video on video2 or something strange like that.

Just a thought. Check the tv docs to see if there is something like that going on.

I believe the character generator in the 3805 can only generate a 480i image.

If the component input is not 480i, the character generator cannot overlay graphics on top of the picture.

I blieve you can tell the Denon to display characters on an otherwise black screen. This would naturally mean your TV would have to detect the loss of your original signal, and re-sync to the 480i singal to display graphics, then go through the process again when the character generator stops and reverts back to the original signal.
