Denon 3803 video switching question

I am trying to setup a HD cable box, DVD/VCR combo and Sony analog TV through my Denon AVR 3803 using S-video between all devices. The TV has S-video for Video 1 input only. Should this work? If so, does anyone know any tricks to make it work. Here are my experiences:
S-video direct from Cable Box to TV works fine on Video 1.
DVD/VCR to TV with coax works fine on Channel 3.
When I run the S-video links from cable box and DVD/VCR to Denon and use S-video from Monitor port to TV - no video signal comes through on Video 1 or Channel 3. I have used the onscreen setup and the Video Input options are set properly.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

It should work fine but why bother? Do you have an HDTV? Do you use progressive scan from your DVD player? Is there some reason why you don't want to watch HD and 480P from your DVD player on your TV? Is this to a second set?

TV is analog

Right now, my only TV is a Sony analog model. I get better video quality through S-video then cable coax from DVD player.

Yes, you will most likely get the best picture quality with the s-video cables and the receiver will switch your various inputs with no problems. Just curious, why do you have an HD cable box but not an HDTV? Or do you mean you have digital cable?

Tv

Good question. This is new setup and plan is to get a HDTV. Cost with cable company for HD box was small so I got it. I think this setup should work also but can't get it to switch the video from the cable box or DVDVCR combo to the TV.
Thanks for your help.

Just a quick note - S Video is not your best hookup for picture quality. R/G/B plus a coax digital for audio would be the best assuming you have that option (at least from the dvd player to the tv or receiver). HMDI is what you'll want to look for when buying your new tv set if it's in the budget. It incorporates audio and video. S Video was around in the early 90's and not the preferred method of video connection any longer.

His TV doesn't have component inputs, only s-video. :(

Sad but true... :(
I just wish I could make the switching work with S-video. I am using optical cables for audio between cable box and receiver. That works great to get sound to speakers. I am now wondering if there is a setup in the HD cable box to select S-video out or coax out... My assumption has been that the video signal would be present on all video out connections. Either the video signal is not getting to the Denon 3803 or it is not switching it properly to the monitor tv S-video port.

Most likely your cable box is not set properly. If it's set to HD, either 720P or 1080i, you will not see any signal over the s-video connections. Make sure your cable box is set on 480i output. Also check for what type of output, HDMI, DVI, Component, or s-video. Obviously you do not want the first three. I hope that helps. :)
