I need to buy a new DVD player. I have a big DVD collection, and I want to wait out the HD format war (for a while at least.) Unfortunately I live in an area (Dubai) where I cannot try out any higher-end players. I need to make my choice based on magazine and internet reviews and recommendations. I should note that I will buy a new 720 or 1080 resolution flat screen very shortly.
Over the past few months, I have read nothing but glowing reviews about the Denon DVD-2930. It seemed to be the best thing since sliced bread. It uses the Silicon Optix REON VX chipset. Apparently this is the very latest in up-conversion, and leaves the "old" Faroudja up-conversion in the dust. I was convinced and ready to buy.
Then, starting about a month ago, I started reading reviews about the new Marantz DV7001. Despite the fact that it uses the (supposedly) "old" Faroudja DCDi chipset, it has been getting higher ratings and scores than the Denon.
Does anyone have any advice? Does anyone have any first hand experience with either, or both of these new players? (I know it's a popular Audioholic choice, but I can't get Oppo here.)
Anyway, any advice, or thoughts, would be most welcome.
Thanks in advance,
Marcus
