720P and 1080i via HDMI only.
So, if I keep the 2910 and connect HDMI to my Westinghouse 1080p, I should get 1080i. So what does the new toshiba A1 have over the Denon then? I just trying to figure out if I should return the Denon for a cheaper model until later in the year. It's only money; will give me an excuse to buy an HD player.

The 1920 also does 720p and 1080i via HDMI, so it may be worth it to step down to that and then go for an HD player. What the HD player has over upscaling players is the fact that they are playing 1080p natively, so the resolution should still be a bit better.

I believe with the Toshiba the discs are mastered in 1080p so all the player does is deinterlace to 1080i. Basically no up or down sampling involved.

Yes, I believe you are right. I don't think the toshiba plays in native 1080p either; only 1080i. The site only says the HD-XA1 and HD-A1 upconvert to 1080i and play HD content in the discs native resolution, but it doesn't state 1080p anywhere.

OK, so if the discs are 1080p native and the player doesn't output 1080p, then what IS the advantage?

Very good question, but all info I got was from the Toshiba website. I think I understood the specs right. So, I suppose with that said, there wouldn't be much of an advantage. Look on the site, it says HD content played in disc native resolution which would be 1080p, although it doesnt specifically say that. It does say unconvert SD DVD to 720p, 1080i.

Advantage is no upscaling/downscaling so none off the problems associated with scaling. As far as the 1080p I believe a firmware upgrade down the road will solve this. As it stands there aren't too many TV's that can accept a true 1080p signal.

In this case though, his set is 1080p capable. My TV can do 1080i, so does that mean I'll already be getting the most out of what the A1 and XA1 are already capable of (until firmware update)?

It looks like people are liking the upscaled output from the Toshiba player better than just about anything else. See THIS thread.

Too bad I opened the box of 2910, but can still take it back. Too bad they haven't done a review here on it.

The 2910 is a serious waste of money and this site recommended it and for that I say **** you to all who did. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY. Denon is overpriced ****. Especially their DVD players. The Yamaha players are better at half the cost. The 2910 is the biggest P.O.S. I own. Seriously. I now believe, DO NOT BELIEVE EVERY THING YOU READ, EVEN ON AUDIOHOLICS. The denon 2910 is unreliable, fussy, and above all, a waste of money as it is no better than most others even if this site and it's gullable readers beleive otherwise.

So you have a bad experience with one player and now you are an expert? Not likely. Denon makes some of the best DVD players on the market, and the fact that they consistently get great reviews both professional and private is a testament to that. I've owned a number of Denon players and each has been excellent. ALL players can be fussy. I understand you aren't pleased, but that does not give you free reign.

Ditto. One bad experience with a 2910 does not make all 2910's bad, or all Denon overpriced, or all Audioholics reviews slanted.

Then why don't you sell it? Some member or this forum may buy it and it might be me if the price is right. :p
