Denon 2910 and 720p/1080i

I recently purchased a Denon 2910 DVD player. It supposedly upconverts 480p to 720p or 1080i. However, it appears to only do this with a HDMI connector. My dealer has assured me (twice) that it is possible to this with components.

He told me to set the HDMI to off on the 2910 and set the format to 720p or 1080i. When I cycle between the format, my TV goes blank briefly and returns saying the signal is 480p. It doesn't matter what the DVD player is set to, the TV always reports 480p from the DVD player.

Any thoughts on this? I want to avoid the HDMI connector, yet would like to see the upconverted resolution. My TV does upconversion as well, but I was hoping to see if there was a quality difference between the TV and the DVD player.

My system specs are in my sig.

I believe your dealer is incorrect. IIRC, the upconversion features are only available over the digital connection.

Any thoughts on whether the Hitachi TV and the DVD player will have a quality difference?

From various reviews I've read, the upconverting players seem to show the most improvement on fixed pixel displays (plasma, DLP, LCP etc). Not familiar with your Hitachi's numbers, but if it's a RP/CRT, then I doubt you're going to notice a big difference. But heck---you've got the player so why not give it a try? If it doesn't look like the difference is worth it, you can take the cable back for a refund and hook the component cables back up.

Hello
Mort is correct, the 2910 will only up convert 720p and 1080i through its digital outputs the component outputs are limited to 480p
The Denon 2910 when outputting a progressive signal of 480p through its component outputs will look better than the Hitachi internal processor/scalar
Receiving an interlaced signal it will also have significantly less jaggies because of its Faroudja processing. The Denon also has many adjustable user setting to tweak your display device to perfection. ;)
