How would the 2809ci compare to a dedicated pre/pro using the pre/outs to the same amp? What pre did you compare it to? Probably applies to 2808 also as they seem to be very close hardware wise.

Thanks

I would imagine that the 2809 would do very well as a pre-pro....there are many members here that use their Denons as pre-pro so they might be able to chime in for you. The short answer is, IMHO, the unit is more than competent to use as a pre-pro. For the money, and if you can do with only 2 HDMIs, you can get the 2808ci right now for $598 which is a steal and leaves you more $$$ to add to your amp money....:)

For amp(s) are you thinking of 2 channel for the front L/R or going five or seven channel? Many receiver owners find that by relieving the receiver the full load of driving ALL channels by just getting a 2 channel for the front L/R works just fine. The Emotiva XPA 5 is the same price as their XPA 2, and gives you 200 watts X 5, and is four ohm stable also. It will drive the poo poo out of any 5.0 speakers you have. 1000 watts for $799.00, plus the price of a decent receiver.

Given the lack of good but low priced Pre/Pro's on the market, this is an option for me if I upgrade. I have an Emotive LMC-1 Pre/Pro and LPA-1 Amp that I bought a year and a half ago 4th. of July sale for $850.00. I got lucky. And it suits me fine for now.

Marantz AV8003 Pre-Pro: Crosstalk -86 dB, THD 0.023%, Freq. Resp. 20 Hz – 20 kHz +/- 0.7 dB, SNR -122 dBrA
Denon 3808CI Receiver: Crosstalk -88 dB, THD 0.004%, Freq. Resp. 20 Hz – 20 kHz +/- 0.0 dB, SNR -106 dBrA

I don't know about the 2809/2808, but the Denon 3808 Receiver does at LEAST as well as the Marantz Pre-Pro, if not BETTER.

Thanks for the replys. I like the 2809 very well the sound seems to be very well balanced. I have it paired to an Emotiva IPS1. I am still on the EMO preorder list before since 12 noon the first day it was avalible. Not sure the EMO will bring anything additional to the table the Denon does not.

The EMO will bring nothing to the table that the Denon hasn't alread brought.

..unless you want to count issue and CS problems...

I have never tried a separate prepro with my amps but I do find my Denons (using preouts) sound as good as my Adcom preamp if not better. I would think that if you wish to yield a different kind of voice you may want to try a tube prepro.

dssmith, I'd take at least a glance at the new Outlaw coming out. Ya know, one nice thing about receivers as pre's is that they are helluva lot cheaper. Just think of all the folks using a Yam 663 for a pre. What's that, $300 or so?

But the Denon 2809, at least at a glance, has already approached pre/pro prices.

Anyways, just a heads up. The one thing I'd be curious about with Outlaw is the Trinnov, which does have a good rep, but I wonder how it compares with XT. It does, however, give you Reon VP, as well as a transferrable 5 yr warranty. Seems to cost about $200 more, plus change. cheers.

oh, maybe another value proposition could be used Integra 9.8s that are being sold by plenty of folks getting a 9.9! Balanced XLR outputs, dual HDMI outputs, Audyssey Pro capability, Reon, etc.

I noticed a slight veildness to the sound compared to the emo pre/pro. I like the dynamic EQ but dislike the Dynamic Volume of the Denon. Without the A/B listening I can not tell the difference now though at this point. The EMO has been sold.

Another good thing is that the Amplifier inside the receiver serves as a great BACKUP just in case your dedicated amplifier malfunctions.

True. On that note, if the outboard amp is 5-ch, you can use receiver channels to do a 7.1. Or crazier yet, you can use the receiver's amps to do multiple side surrounds for a multi-row theater. I know, I've researched this. :p Just level match amp channels. ;)
