Is the 2807 really better than the 3806? Looking at the specs, the 2807 has better upconversion capability and has same or better functions than the 3806 except that it has less power (100W vs 120W).
Is there really a difference in 100 vs 120W?
I was set on getting the 3806 but now undecided with the 2807 coming out soon.

I questioned the same thing 2 weeks ago. The specs, to me, look better on the 2807 and it looks like it has better hdmi compatibility. I'd save the 2-300 bucks and get the 2807 over the 3806.

20 watts of power would not make an audible difference anyway if you already have 100.

It's 110W, not 100W !

According tom Denon , it's 110W/ch for 2807:

For starters there's almost 10 pounds difference, also 3806 has:

  • 120W
  • Dynamic Discrete Surround Circuit – D.D.S.C - D
  • HDCD Decoder
  • True 24-bit/192-kHz Digital Input Capability (Denon Link & 1394)
  • Digital Input – DENON Link 3rd (SACD Ready)
  • Digital to Analog REC Out
  • PC Setup and Control Capability
  • 4x Independent Power Supplies
  • AL24 Processing - All Channels
  • 24-bit/192-kHz DACs – Burr-Brown PCM-1791
  • Analog-to-Digital Conversion - Bit Depth/Sampling Rate 24/192
  • Pre-programmed/Learning EL Remote with Backlighting and Punch Through Commands
and a couple of other differences

cheers:)

MACCA350, There may be differences in your 3806 and the USA version... You state "Digital to Analog REC Out
PC Setup and Control Capability", but neither exist on my (US version) AVR-3806 (wish they did!).

zildjian, that list was taken from comparing the spec sheets on the Denon USA website for 3806 and 2807

I was assuming it was accurate because I took it straight from Denon USA.

cheers:)

I too see both "PC Setup and Control Capability" & "Digital to Analog REC Out" on Denon's website (thanks for pointing that out MACCA350); I hope I'm wrong about not having these features on my 3806, but I cannot find anything in the owners manual about PC connectivity for the 3806. The RS-232C terminal it has will hook up to touch screen panels/controllers, but I can't find anything about being able to connect it to PCs.

Does anybody know anything more about the PC Setup & Control feature?

Also, for the "Digital to Analog REC Out", I again see it on Denon's website too, but in my owners manual, it says

"If you wish to perform analog dubbing from a digital source, such as a CD or MD recorder to an analog recorder such as a cassette desk, you will need to connect the analog inputs and outputs...in addition to the digital audio connections."

I found that to be true on my unit after (assuming it had the digital to analog feature) having only the digital connections from the source to the 3806 and not being able to get an analog signal to my MD recorder or TV in my second zone.

So again, if anybody knows the details of the "Digital to Analog REC Out" feature or the "PC Setup and Control Capability", let us know, because I'd love to have more setup capabilities for my 3806.

Thanks,
Brad

IMHO I think this fact means the most, most likely equates to a more robust power section that will become more apparent with all channels driven, Watts alone aren't enough when looking at Specs.

"PC Setup and Control Capability" and "Digital to Analog REC Out" are both checked as features per Denon's USA site under 3806 detailed specifications.

I'm still doubting the validity of these two specs, I think it may be a typo on Denon's part, but it's still stated there on their site. Again, I hope I'm wrong, and it be true.

Maybe it has the 'Capability' but they haven't written software to support it yet.

If no one posts anything on this sooner or later, I'll just call Denon's tech department and ask about it. I've called them twice before w/ questions before purchasing my 3806 and after purchase w/ eq ?'s, and the guy I've talked to in their tech department both times, not so friendly...

I have been agonizing over the same dilemma for 2 months now

Hi
I am a Virgin to this forum so be easy on me :D
I have been agonizing over the same dilemma for the past 2 months now. The 3806 vs the 2807. I waited all this time in order to get the 2807 but I am having second thoughts ... I really want to just get this over already as I bought a new Plasma display in Jan. and my old Denon the 3020 ( really old :) ) blew a channel and I have been waiting to replace it. I have a 50 Panasonic display and 2 s video decks ( also old ) those were to do coping and little video edits and the like. I bought a apple super drive for the purpose to make DVD videos and the like and didn't make one in 4 yrs  .. So I am looking to refresh my system
I am also buying a Denon DVD player I am leaning towards the 23 vs the 19 but am still no 100% ....
I love to listen to music but, I have an 8 yr old son ( I'm a single dad ) so I don't get to listen to music much
We do love to watch movies & sports together ( hence the Plasma display and now a new AV/Amp needed
My system consists currently of Infinity Reference One Speakers all around( also old  )
Infinity Infinitesimal sub ( also old  )
Panasonic 50 PD ( w/o tuner)
Sony ES ( also old ) muti disc changer
Comcast digital( DVR ) w/ HD TV cable service. This is my signal source i.e. not the PD. My reason for pointing this out is because I have heard a good deal of talk regarding the up video conversion issues with the 3806 ( which I am still not clear on and is why i was waiting for this holy grail to come out ;) the 2807..
I know I will not be getting the ipod hook up or the sat radio with the older 3806 but maybe the attributes which MACCA350 pointed out outweigh those benefits ?
Is it true that his list below falls primalry in the Audio area vs the Video area ? ( some of this stuff is a bit over my head at the moment )
MACCA350 For starters there's almost 10 pounds difference, also 3806 has:

So I was hoping that someone out there who has a good take on this may be able to guide me as to which AV receiver I should go with ?
I am now leaning back a little towards the 3806 after calling the Denon Tech support guy ( Which btw was really very nice and spent at least 15 mins on the phone with me )
So, any insight would be greatly appreciated
Regards
Ed

ps I had also asked him about the PC control.....
"PC Setup and Control Capability" and "Digital to Analog REC Out"
He said that, they are on the 3806, you just have to go through the set up to access them. I asked him is a 10 based T, he said it's a cat 5 netwk cable.
edit I just looked at the back of 2807 and it seems not to be a 10 base T cable but an RS 232c input

The only 10BaseT port on the back of the 3806 is for the Denon Link feature. I was under the impression that it was just for hooking up to Denon DVD players. How can that be used for PC control/setup?

I was assuming it would be through the RS-232C terminal. Below is what is stated about the RS-232C terminal in the manual for BOTH 3806 and 2807:confused:

This terminal is used for an external controller. Perform the following operation before using an external controller connected to the RS-232C terminal:
1. Press the ON/STANDBY switch on the main unit and set the unit to the operating mode.
2. Perform the operation to turn off the power from the external control.
3. Check that the product has been set to the standby mode. After checking the above, check the connections of the external controller.
Operation is possible.
But as I said earlier, this "PC Setup and Control Capability" may be a feature yet to be supported. Maybe Crazy Eddie could ask Denon for a little more info about this.

cheers:)

I've emailed back and forth with Denon about these two features:
"Digital to Analog REC Out" & "PC Setup and Control Compatibility"

The "PC Setup and Control Compatibility" is via the RS-232C port, not the ethernet port, and it's said to be compatible with an actual PC/Personal Computer (and of course AMX and Crestron control panels, we knew that), but the word PC is what we were most confused about. I'd like to hook a PC to my AVR 3806, but it appears it's just a serial protocol command line system, no neat GUI interface, have to make one of those ourselves (like with visual basic). There appears to be no commands available via this system outside what you can already do with your remote control, just a setup option for someone who wants to hide their AVR beyond the site of their remote control (or an IR repeater).

"Digital to Analog REC Out": Denon typo. This is the first time on this forum I'm sorry I was right about something I said earlier. This was an error on the website; there is no digital to analog conversion on the AVR 3806. Denon unchecked that feature on the AVR 3806 tech specs webpage after my last email to them yesterday. I was at least hoping that current new 3806 had this feature and my fall 2005 model of the 3806 just wouldn't do it. :( Denon says "sorry".

Sadly sometimes manual don't have the answers. We've all been through the 3806 manual several times (and several of us here own the units); PC Compatibility isn't discussed at all. The only related item is the one paragraph saying you can use a control panel like from AMX or Crestron; there is no use of the word "PC" in the manual. The Digital to Analog Rec Out isn't in the manual either, which now is clear why, this isn't a feature the 3806 has... see my post above...
