i've had it for a couple weeks now and the dts or dolby light do not come on while playing such sources. i'm using an older sony dvd player and the coax connection (hooked up to the "coax 1 in" connection on the denon). do i have to use the fiber optic connection? the only surround modes that appear are the dolby prologic IIx and the dts neo 6.1 (besides the stadium, stereo, etc...). the problem could be my dvd player, altho its dolby light lights up fine. this is my first receiver/ht system, so sorry if this is a really novice question, but any insight would be appreciated...

Try going into the dvd player's menu. You may have to enable DTS or set audio output to "bitstream." You should not need a fiber optic cable. The digital Coax you are using will work just fine.

As per bigbassdave, check the output in the player first.

In the menu of the 2805, for the DVD you need to do 2 things [1] Ensure that the DVD input is set to use the correct coax input & [2] Set the audio to "Auto"

That's the most important clue right there. The two prior responses are right on the money. The player must be set to PCM, so it is downmixing the DD to 2 channel PCM and that is why the receiver only allows a matrix decoder like PLIIx. Set the player to output bitstream and assign the inputs on the receiver and you should be good to go.

i just went thru the auto setup using the supplied mic and it was quite straightforward and quick. and i definitely noticed an improvement in sound (especially of the surround effects). my question is, should i buy one of those radio shack spl meters and fine tune it further, or will i be fine with the setup i did? also, what are your thoughts on the avia home theater setup disc or any other setup disc? what exactly do these setup discs help you do? right now, i think my sub's phase needs to be adjusted, and i haven't altered any of the settings on my 27" sony wega (27HS420). thanks for all the help guys...

Auto setup

The auto setup on your receiver should be pretty good. Most people find that the speaker distances are accurate and the volume levels are within 1 dB when comparing with the Radio Shack meter.

Your best bet would be to double check some of the speakers settings. Here is what I would recommend:
Speaker size - set all to SMALL
Crossorver - lowest frequency of your speakers, probably around 80 Hz
Sub - Yes, Sub only, not both.
PEQ - Experement with turning this off, on FLAT, etc.

If you want to tweak your video, AVIA or Digital Video Essentials are your best bet. For $40 the Radio Shack SPL meter will help you check your speaker levels and calibrate/position your sub.

Once you've done the setup & room EQ, try out the various ones that have been stored - Off, Normal, Flat, Front - I found that the Normal setting gave the best sq for my particular layout, but that may differ for you.
