Denon 2200 Vs 2910 Vs. OPPO Digital

Hello all- I am getting ready to purchase the Sony 60" SXRD 1080p television, and want to make sure my DVD player does the new Tv proper justice.

I currently have a Denon 2200 and am wondering if I would see a difference if I went w/either a Denon 2910 or the OPPO player using the DVI/HDMI outputs as opposed to the component from the 2200.

I have seen the Secrets DVD Benchmark results, but wanted to get everyone's opininon on if an upconverting DVD player will give me noticeable picture improvement over my already solid 2200.

Thanks in advance to all for any responses.

I'd expect the Oppo will give you an improvement, though whether or not it is a dramatic one I couldn't say. The Oppo bests the 5910 on thier benchmark, and that's saying a lot. The 2910 probably isn't going to be enough of an upgrade to warrant the cost.

I'm happy with my Oppo. I have noticed no defects during normal movie watching (albeit I didn't run it through rigorous tests like the reviewer here). I couldn't justify spending much more on a DVD player that would offer an incremental improvement - especially with the high def video formats releasing this year.

Oh geez here we go again  What a deservice to good engineering when people misinterpret the results of a limited test procedure by declaring b/c the player scored equally or better to the industries current best DVD player that the two players are on equal footing.

Also check out our DVD Checklist which puts these players through a comprehensive test suite and you will see just how differently these players are, as they should be given price, market, and build quality.

I plan on doing a formal review of the Denon 5910CI soon and will be doing some audio measurements. Stay tuned...

I'm not saying the two are on even footing, but given the prices, the secrets comparison said the picture quality (upconverted) was excellent, and I should have been more clear that was the only aspect I was commenting on. Given the vast price difference, that would suggest that the Oppo is likely worth it's $200 price tag, not that it is somehow a better player than the 5910 :) Is it better than the 2200 either? Probably not by a large margin, but for $200 it would be a lot easier to buy one and find out vs the price of a 2910 new.

Here is my take. I reviewed both the 2900 and Oppo.

As far as picture quality, they were close, with the Oppo slightly better. Where the main difference was was in the Multi-channel Out -- the audio. The Denon kicked a$$. Obviously, the DAC's in the Oppo are not as high quality as the Denon.

In the end, because I do not listen to DVD-A or SACD, I chose the Oppo. Better used money towards my speakers.

This discussion is almost making me sick. When I see a $200 DVD player that beats certain models from Yamaha, Denon, and Marantz - not to mention the $1900 DV6500 - on the High Quality Video performance tests, I call it a winner. (The Oppo passed the HQV Film Detail Test whereas the Yamaha, Denon, Marantz and DV6500 failed)

Now, this being "Audioholics" and all, I can appreciate your concern for high quality audio. But in that case, just get a separate CD or DVD-A player.

He already has a capable universal player with the 2200, which he could continue to use for audio. If he added the Oppo just for video, he wouldn't need to add anything else, but if the desire it to have both audio and video all in one box, then the Oppo probably isn't going to do it.

and you factor in the price of a separate CD/DVD-A player and the Oppo and you are at the price range of a single Denon solution that does it all in one box with superior build quality, durability and the ability to do 480p via component video outputs to a second zone

OPPO's digital audio output vs. Denon 2910

I am not currently interested in DVD-A or SACD...so what I would like to know is, how is the OPPO's digital output for redbook CD's. Whenever we talk about a DVD player's audio performance we end up talking about its DACs, but I am told the digital output quality can differ as well. Can anyone give me info about the quality of the OPPO's digital audio signal, and how it compares to the Denon 2910? Thanks.

If using a digital connection, your sound will essentially be determined by the receiver's DACs, so the two will sound more similar than not for redbook CDs.

That is not entirely accurate. Jitter, tracking ability, etc can still factor in. The DAC is a huge part in determining fidelity but the transport is also important. In the case of the OPPO it is still outclassed against entry level Denon's.

I think it is interesting that there is a discussion as to which is better, a $200 player or a $2000. It would seem to me that for this much difference in price, there should be no discussion. Since there is, the $200 player would be the obvious choice.
