Denon 1910 - how to play hd audio from blu ray

Hi folks,

I have a Denon AVR 1910 which is hooked upto a panasonic bd60 blu ray player via hdmi.

Now, I'm facing a situation where I'm unable to figure out how to play HD Audio( either Dolby TrueHD or DTS HD MA audio) from my blu rays? I mean how do I configure this using my remote. And how do I set it as default to automatically pick up these lossless formats when I use a specific Blu ray? In addition, how do I play uncompressed 5.1 sound from a blu ray?

Secondly, how do I know for sure its actually playing these audio formats?

I have tried to configure my Panny blu ray and set digitial audio output to bitstream and secondary audio/video to Off.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Neo

You want the blu ray player to output bitstream, and the 1910 should just automatically decode it when it detects it.

Thanks GlocksRock.

But
1) how do u configure bitstream in the Panny BD60 player?
2) Secondly, how do i configure the 1910 to automatically detect HD audio coming from the blu ray media?
3) in cases of uncompressed PCM, how do I configure the 1910 to automatically decode this format?

Thanks.

No offense, but didn't either of these come with manuals? OR, if not, did you search on-line for them?

I haven't set up a Panny BD60 in a while, but there options in the setup menu, as far as the 1910, it will automatically decode the HD audio once it receives it, and in the case of PCM, it's already decoded so the receiver doesn't haved to do anything.

Help! Denon 1910 - how to play hd audio from blu ray

Hi,

I did go thru the manuals and did manage to setup in some way using the back side buttons of the remote, but it doesnt setup permanently. The moment I switch off the receiver, and next time use it, the settings are lost and I have to click on those buttons back again.

Secondly, I did play some blu rays like Hellboy(DTS HD MA) & Spiderman 3(Dolby TrueHD) and found considerable difference. Does this mean that

(a) Is DTS HD MA the better of the two HD encoders?
(b) OR the Denon Receiver does not decode to the best, the Dolby TruHD encoded material? do i have to do anything else to make it sound as good as dTS HD MA?

This is because, I;ve read in quite a number of forums that both DTS HD MA & Dolby TruHD are pretty much same standards.

Third point - if i have a blu ray with audio uncompressed 5.1(neither TruHD nor DTS HD) such as...pirates of the carribean, do I need to configure it differently? or use a different setting on the receiver to get the best quality audio from this blu ray?

I tried setting up the Panny BD 60 and it seems to be set to bit stream.

Would appreciate if someone can pls help me on these points.
Thanks.

Not all audio on all discs are equal, it just depends on how they are mixed. Both are compressed lossless formats, and should sound exactly the same if encoded in either format. If you are playing a disc with PCM audio and your receiver displays PCM, then you are getting the best audio you can get. Not sure about your receiver settings, have you looked at the batpig denon to english instructions, if not check it out, it may assist you in setting up your receiver properly. I have a 1910, but don't use it for blu ray or HD material, only SD stuff, and mainly just for stereo audio so I can't help you with that stuff.

Hi,

thanks. I did refer to batpig even before i referred the manuals, but it doesn't provide detailed instructions on this level kind of configuration.

I did try around half a dozen blu rays in past week and I have observed that with dts hd ma and dolby Truhd, the receiver does light up the Blue "HD Audio" logo. However, amongst the two i have found in general, DTS HD MA sounding the best. Now i tried a blu ray with uncompressed PCM and it didnt light up the logo, neither did it display PCM.

Do I need to configure a different setting just for this PCM uncompressed source?

Second question, whats the best way to get the best sound, when I connect a WD HD media player? I'm connecting the device via hdmi.

Thanks.
