Denon 1082 HT setup

I recently bought a set of used Energy speakers and the seller threw in his Denon 1082. I was planning to get a newer receiver with HDMI, web interface yada yada for the HT setup, but thought I've give the old Denon a try since it's here and seems to do a good job with stereo inputs (eventually, it'll probably end up in a stereo-only setup).

But getting the thing hooked up is kicking my A&%! I'm tempted to just throw in the towel and go back to plan A, but I hate to give up! I've tried RCAs, optical in every config I can think of and am starting to think I'm just not selecting the right input. I haven't even been able to do any setup with the Denon through the on-screen menu.

So, to anyone with an opinion or some experience with this unit... is it even worth spending the time to get the thing connected? Will the 1082 pass through HD video from Sat receiver and PS3, or should I just output sound from the TV to the Denon?

If anyone has a similar setup and can offer some basic advice I'd much appreciate it. Here's are the components I'm having trouble with:

Receiver: Denon 1082
TV: Panasonic Viera 52"
Sources: Directv DRV/Sat Box, PS3

Thanks!
