Dell Laptops that have a Sony Battery

Already got a 2 year old Dell.

Getting a brand new battery for it for free and have had no problems with the one in it for the past 2 years... other than it beginning to lose power much quicker than the day I got it.

What'd they say - 5 cases reported of overheating/fire out of millions sold? Car companies would probably bury stats like that.

Dell is still shipping me my replacement battery. The battery never gave my any problems, so I may as well consider it a free battery. I bought the laptop used for a great price and I get a new free battery a year and a half later, what's to complain about? :p

Apple also used Sony batteries and has recalled 1.8 million batteries shipped with their systems. I believe that HP uses some Sony batteries too, so we might see an HP/Compaq recall within the next few weeks.

Dell tends to put alot of crapware on their computers. Best thing to do is a fresh install of the OS. I really liked my Insprion 5160 P4 (could even play BF2 on it) but after two years of use combined with the heat and dust here, it gave up the ghost.

If you look and wait you can find great deals on Dells. I just ordered a new XPS M1210 with 1.8mhz core duo ( going to upgrade to a merom chip when I get back ), 1Gig ram (another Gig from newegg is on the way), 80Gig 7200rpm HD, 256 video card and a 3yr warranty/ 3 year accidental damage coverage for under $1500.

If I was a day quicker with the purchase there were 4 - M1210's in their outlet store with the 256 video card all priced under $1300 and most of them had better stats than what my laptop has.

To get a comparable laptop from Aleinware or Sager was going to be 400-800 dollars more.

Dude,

get a desktop! :p

That lappy has better specs then my gaming rig! Mind you, My rig is getting close to 3 years of age(only 1 reformat so far).

I'm going to a lan party this sat. and the biggest problem is people not being able to play the games at hand. I can do them all cept BF2(well I can, but it would look like anus).

BTW, what make are all those parts? Not all 1gig sticks of ram are equal.

My Rig:
-AMD XP2500+ Barton Mobile OC'd to 2.2Ghz.
-OCZ Optimized Platinum 1gig PC3200 ram with 2-2-2-5 timings
-Sapphire 9800Pro 128Mb(256Bit) Gcard OC'd to XT speeds (421core, 375ram) with Arctic Cooling VGA silencer (blows hot air out of case)
-Maxtor Diamond Max 9 80gig HDD (woop dee doo)
-LG DVD drive
-LG CD burner
-Raidmax Scorpio 18inch tower case with stock PSU (next to go)
-Buttloads of 80mm Coolermaster Blue LED fans

Thats her, she be alright.

Matt,

If you meant 5150, that doesn't surprise me that it took a crap on you. And I don't think the dust and heat are totally to blame. The fan design on those tends to suck up dust like a vacuum cleaner. As a Dell tech, I've cleaned some monsterous dust bunnies out of all the 1100/1150 5100/5150 style computers. Some have been so bad the fan could barely turn!

Also, last year I saw a run of Inspiron 5150 computers that all had motherboard failures. The common symptom was that the computer wouldn't turn on. Often the three LEDs in front would flash when the power button was depressed, but then they would just go off and the computer would never start.

With your new computer, I'm glad you opted for the 3-year warranty with Complete Care. A 3-year warranty is a must, and if you're clutzy or do work like you do, the $95 extra for complete care is worth it.

For anyone else that is still looking to buy a Dell after this whole battery debacle, it is definitely in your best itnerest to purchase the extended warranty. Unlike the extended warranties that many stores offer (like BB), it's well worth the extra cash. If you need to get something like a motherboard for a laptop out of warranty, be prepared to shell out some cash. The last time I checked, a motherboard for a Dell Inspiron 600m or Latitude D600 was $695, shipping included.

It really was a 5160, I swear. You described exactlly what happened with the lights flashing and it not booting whatsoever. I did regular cleaning on it with compressed air(while it was off of course) and had a coolmat under it. I was able to find a few motherboards for it on ebay for $425 but after install fees I wasn't going to put that kind of money in a 2 year old laptop.

Too bad I didn't know about it! I would've installed that for cheap.

How did you go about cleaning out the laptop with compressed air? Did you pull the heatsink/fan out of the computer?
