I'm considering a Definitive Technology system consisting of 7001sc, C/L/R 3000 and BPVX. I heard it today and thought it sounded great. I've been reading alot about Axiom and their system also sounds impressive, however I don't know anyone with the Axiom epic 80-500 system so I can't hear the system.

The $2000 price difference doesn't matter. I had budgeted $5k for speakers and don't want the $2000 price difference to be a factor in my decision.

The DFs sounded fantastic, however, I'm wondering if the Axioms direct fronts might have a purer sound for music.

I'll probably go with the DFs, however any thoughts would be appreciated.

The Axioms might have an advantage for music, but they wouldn't even come close for Home Theater!!!

I have the BP7000sc's, CLR3000, and BPVX/P combo and I am finally happy with the quality of my speakers. Home Theater or should I say Theater never sounded better to me.

How do you feel they perform for music?

Professional reviews seem to love the 7000s and 7001s even for music, however, I can't find many user reviews.

Slee....

Didn't you already purchase ONIX Rockets or was it Reference speakers? Man.... your name looks familiar. I thought I recognized you from the av123 forum.

Either way.... good luck in your search!

I enjoy them alot for music, but I must tell you I listen to mostly Hip Hop which is pretty bass heavy. And Bass is where the Def Techs excel.

No, not me. I'm a newbie who needs some advice. The DFs sounded great to me, but I can't say that I have the most critical ear when it comes to stereo equipment.

I have the Epic 80 with the EP500 sub and can't be happier. My listening habbits are split pretty even between music and movies. My system is nothing fancy, speakers are powered by Denon's 3805 and cd music is handled by their 3910. The speakers are located in the formal living area, which opens up to a breakfast area in the rear and a sitting area to the right so the speakers and sub need to move a lot of air. When listening to music, the speakers are down right fantastic, offering detailed soundstaging when in the main listening position. However, most of the time I'm not in that area for music. Usually, I find myself upstairs or outside enjoying the tunes, and boy are they ever clear.

When viewing movies, the speakers handle the effects with little effort. The VP150 is clear from any position on the couch, located 11' away. The M80s took a little bit of tweaking to find the sweet spot but once located, provides our family with an increadible moving going experience. I have three daughters, 6, 4, and 2, and they are just captivated while watching movies. And isn't that what we want from our ht?

When I first purchased the system, it came with the EP350. But this was quickly replaced with the 500 when it became available. Since then, it's been night and day when it comes to LFEs. The 500 now has my daughters climbing all over me during suspensful moments. My wife and I get a big kick out of that. And for strong bass, it handles those as well.

Now, this is my first real system so I have nothing to which to compare it. But if I had to build all over again, I would purchase the same equipment.

Hope this helps a little.

Have you personally compared the def techs to anything else head to head?

If you open any of the magazines from which they received good reviews, you'll notice a few pages of their advertising...this can't assist in their reviews, could it?

Not to say they're a bad speaker. They are pretty nice, especially for home theater. However, I'd venture to say that for music, they could be handidly beaten by speakers in the same price range and maybe a little cheaper. I'd tell you to audition them with some other good speakers and decide if you like their dynamic, in your face "wow" presentation, or something a bit more like the source material. Your ears may decide you love the deftechs, but shop around. If you like the other sound, the axioms may be worth a try.

Just for your information. I listened to the DT 7002's and the Von-Schweikert VR-2's and VR-4jr as well as the Thiel's 1.2(?). The VR-2's I didn't like at all. The tonal balance wasn't right. I like the VR-4jr and but they lacked bass presence as compared to the DT's. Also the VS were hard to listen to on poorly recorded music. The Thiel's had a slightly better clarity on the mid's and high's but not that much difference over the DT's. My wife hated the VS but liked the Thiels and loved the DT's. If I bought the Thiels, I would have to go a lot higher in price to get what I wanted and I still may have to add a subwoofer to it to get the bass presence. I ended up ordering the DT 7001 with the CLR 3000. I have the BP2004's which I will use as my surround speakers. I like a full soundstage with good clarity while my wife likes to have a live concert feeling.

The VS were at one store and the DT and Thiels were at another and we listened to them in the same afternoon using our music choices. Just to sum up that I think that the DT's (the models I listened to) are still very good speakers for music and stand up pretty well against other speakers in their price range and in some cases, speaker that cost more (e.g., Von Schweikerts). This is just my opinion and other people will surely have different thoughts on this.
