definition of Signal to Noise ratio

Hi,
Please excuse me if this is pitched at the wrong audience, but any help would be appreciated. I am currently testing the Signal to Noise Ratio(SNR) of a number of different audio devices. I have read many different articles on the web to do with how to measure SNR and unsure now on which is the most appropriate method. I suppose it comes down to whether to measure SNR with a signal present or without?

Can someone please help out?
