Def Techs - cleaning

I was just doing some serious listening and looking at my speakers, I realized that the socks on the towers are really dusty. Anyone know the best way to clean these? There's nothing in my manual or on their site... that I could find anyway. Do any of you Def Tech owners run withou the socks on at all?

I've used those adhesive lint/pet-hair rollers (like you would use on a black top coat, for example) available at any walmart or target. Works great, and will have your DT's looking sharp again.

That's what I use. Really cant think of anything else that would do the job very easily. Vacuum cleaner might, but can get dangerous if the air flow gets cut down so suction goes up!

I was thinking about taking the socks off the towers. I was thinking I could soak them in cold water and let them dry out... maybe even leave them off. I'll give the lint roller a shot though... but I'm really thinking about stripping them down.

I'm a fan of lint rollers for cleaning off speaker grilles.

Wow, Chris, I've had my DefTechs longer than you have, and I have never had to clean those black speaker "socks"!:D

What are you doing with them?

The lint rollers work great, but if there is dust that is not on the outer surface, the roller won't get to it.
Check the owners manual or contact Def Tech to see what they suggest. Once they get wet, you won't be able to see where the dust is! Soap will cause the dust to "lift" from the socks, but you'd want DT to tell you what detergent is safe to use.
I'd guess mild diswashing detergent (not machine detergent) followed by rinse off.

I don't know... I think a lot of it comes from the fireplace... the ash I guess... oh and yes before the peanut gallery chimes in... in Florida we do have fireplaces... and yes... I know I don't know what "real" cold is... and yes... 50 degrees is cold to me and yes... I like to have a fire.

I just notice that on the edges it's not as black as the rest of the cloth. So it makes sense that that is where the dust sorda collects. It's not like their filthy or anything, but you can certainly see they're a bit grayish on some edges.

Speaking of dust... I don't know if it's just a FL thing, but the housekeeper comes every 2 weeks and we still have dust. I just moved the bed in the one spare bedroom and under there was ton dust under the bed. I mean no one is even in that room and yet there's dust ... under the bed!

So apparently I'm not the only one who lives in squaller... thank you Mr. AccuDefTechGuyWhoApparentlyLivesInAVaccumeSealedEnvironmentFreeOfEvenTheSmallestParticlesOfLint... for giving me a complex ... :p

Chet at DefTech said they suggest just using a damp cloth. Taking the socks off isn't easy anymore. He said they staple them around the amp section so you to take the amp off, yank the staples, blah, blah, blah. Not gonna happen. I think a quick run along the edges with a damp sponge will do the trick.

Maybe your housekeeper was just sweeping all your dust into that spare bedroom :D

There is no dust collection on Krypton since there is no gravity.:D

But seriously, yeah, I have some dusts on all my DefTechs, and I just use a clean damp towel from time to time ----- like once a year.:D

Note: There are no dusts on my DefTechs in all my photos; those are just camera effects ........ or....... something....... like that.:D

Some major factors are carpeted house vs hardwood floors, HVAC filter used, and pets vs none.

We put hardwood floors throughout the house about a year after it was built. The dust is ridiculous compared to carpet. I dont know what's worse... having it all over everything and constantly having it to clean or knowing it's all trapped in your carpets. Oh yeah... i have a 23lb MaineCoon cat. He's a big hairy f-ing planet!
