I have a Marantz SR5002 Receiver and am considering the following two 5.1 speaker systems. Your input is appreciated -

Definitive Technology Procinema 800

OR

SVS SBS-01

I can purchase these systems for about the same price. I am intereted in thoughts from seasoned ears.

You will definitely receive more bang/buck with the SVS. The speakers of the PC1000 are a better comparison to the SBS-01s and there is no comparison between the subs. The SVS goes much deeper.

Toby,

intially, welcome to the forum!

My vote also goes to SVS though, and I'd highly recommend you to get the SCS-01 as your front array (L/C/R). Sure you won't be disappointed at all:)

While I like the sound of both, the SVS gets my vote.

Have you considered ?

Toby,

First welcome to Audioholics.

Second, I like both SVS and Definitive Technology speakers. I think SVS makes some of the best subs and I have Def Tech in my media room and den. I have a Def Tech sub in the media room and a SVS sub in the den.

But have you considered getting some front towers instead of a a system of smaller satellite speakers? Then you could add a matching center. Then surrounds and an SVS subwoofer later.

My best advice, is to go to a nearby HT store and audition various speakers. Be sure to take CDs and/or BDsof the type of music and video you listen too.

The only reason I throw out the idea is once you get a HTIB the next step to upgrade is harder, because you replace just about everything. Having said that SVS andDef Tech HTIB systems are very good. You might also consider the Audioholics sytems; for a couple of hundred more you can get a very nice EMP system with front towers.

Anyway, thanks for listening to me and Good Luck!

Peace,

Forest Man

How much money are we talking about?

And why have you narrowed down to just these two brands?:D

There are other brands like HSU and Aperion, etc.

Just make sure whichever you buy has a great RETURN POLICY!

For example, Aperion will give you free shipping for both ways in case you want to return (30 day period).

Very good point about the return policy. You need to be pleased with the sound in your place.

Good Luck!

I have Def Tech. I love Def Tech.

I would go with SVS for the sub. But as posted above me, look at Hsu and Aperion too. All good options, all better bang/buck than Def Tech for subs.

You know I was going to toss in the name EPIK subwoofer in the mix.

But then I just went to their website and EVERY single subwoofer is listed as OUT OF STOCK!

I love all my Def Tech speakers, but I have no experience with their smaller speakers, but I'm sure they are very good. I have also heard nothing bad about the SVS speakers, so I'm sure you will be happy either way. But for a subwoofer, I would definitely go with SVS.

I have tested both the lower end DefTechs and the SBS and MBS of SVS and agree for the cost go with SVS speakers and sub. I rated them very high for the cost, something I couldnt do with the Procenter line, and I love my DT setup.
