I am putting together an AV system @ home...I have some old B&W DM640 speakers and was wondering if they would be ok and save$ or if I should break down and invest in AV brand like def tech? The surrounds would be some Advents I have...I'd need a new center channel I figure too...I'm driving everything from yamaha RXV2500...

thanks for advise...

If you like the sound of the B&W's, then they will work just fine. But you will need to get a center channel that matches them. Another B&W center with a similar sound would be your best bet.

If you can't find a center that matches, you could put the B&W's as rears and get all new fronts.

I really think it depends on your main use. Def tech's are a good brand, with a nice range of sounds. If you are going to invest in their BP 7000 line of speakers that are worth it for movies. They are not the crispest sounding speakers out, but are just attractive because another sub is not required. But because they are punchy and powerful, they work well for movies. Stick with the B&W for music I think.

listened today

I went out speaker listening today and listened to the def tech speakers (BP7006). I had listed to B&W (I don't remember which speaker) and Klipsch Reference towers at another store earlier in the day. All the speakers I listened to were in the $875-$1200 a pair range.

I liked the def tech the best. I listened to a variety of music: alt country, a cappella (men and women), rock, electronic, classical piano, symphonic, classic jazz, and modern jazz. I liked the def tech the most. Almost too much bass, but you can adjust the bass on the speaker. I found the B&W some what muddled with less clear mid range and trebles. I thought the Klipsch were somewhat shrill with sibilance slightly distracting with the vocals. I did not audition any speakers for movies or in a surround configuration.

If you are happy with what you have then by all means keep what you have. I agree with the advise above to get a matching center. If you are intrested in new speakers, listen to as many as you can in your price range. Keep in mind that some good speakers can sound bad if not set up properly. Some big box stores are not a good place to audition speakers. I have and enjoy my def techs.
