Def Tech BP7006 or EMP EF50T with sub?

I need a two channel setup for my den/family/open kitchen area to go with my new HDTV: the wife won't go for a full surround setup in this area, and the speakers have to be decor friendly. I already have a 5.1 setup in a dedicated home theater room.

I've narrowed my selection down to the DT 7006 or the EMP 50T with a sub. The deal on the Audioholics store for the EMPs is really nice, and I'm thinking that I could put the surrounds in my dedicated HT room or just sell them. I've read a lot of good things about the DefTechs though, and if I got those, I wouldn't get a sub (which the wife would appreciate). Actually, I'd rather get the EMP EF30s, but my wife would never approve of their size.

Any thoughts on these two choices would be appreciated.

How big is your room? The def techs should still sound pretty good even with their smaller sub. I would probably go with the Def Tech's, but that's just me.

I have Def Techs and they are outstanding. I do not know anything about the EMP; they are a promising new company formed from RHB enginnerrs in partenrship with Audioholics and appear to be promising.

I have older Def Tech BP2006s which are the predecessor to the BP7006s which I moved to my media room; they have great sound. I upgrade my den to BP7002s towers.and CLR3000 centers. The are really great with or without the surrounds and/or sub. They fit in to almost any decor because they are black with gloss black piano tops. The subwoofer in your proposed 7006 towers will provide pretty good bass without a separate subwoofer.

If you already have surrouns , the ones you have will work. Surround just enhance the fron t and cneter speaker and don't have to match in timbre.

Good luck!

The room is kind of large, but I don't know the measurements. I sit about 10 feet from my TV, and I have a kitchen and breakfast area behind me. The ceiling is about 11 feet. I'm currently trying a pair of Mirage Omnisat V2 floorstanding speakers: they're ok, but I think that I could find better sounding speakers with better base for the money (so I'm going to return them).

Do you think that the EF50Ts will get lost in the room even with a sub?

I was all set to go with the DTs until Audioholics came out with these EMP package deals for May.

My room is approximately 30 x 15 with 11' ceilings. Would the EMP EF50s get lost in there?

That is a big room (almost 5,000 c.f.). You will probably want a dedicated subwoofer.

But the final question remains whether your WIFE will let you?:D

If your wife allows for a Sub, then get whatever system + a sub.

If your wife does NOT allow a Sub, then get the BP7006s or similar.

I have the def 7001s, 7004s, and 7006s. I think I am losing it! I can tell you for sure the 7006s are entry level and sound a little over bass to me and not that good of a quality bass at that, too boomy (reminds me of my old Sansui's) also not sharp on the highs either so, when listening to movies, voices can slightly muffled, but the 7004s thats when they begin to SHINE!

For some reasons, Def Tech owners are kind of crazy!

We tend to go way overboard!:D

I think GlocksRocks has like 20 Def Tech speakers or something.:D

No, just 12, but that's for 2 different systems.

Well, I ordered the EMP50T system last night, and I'm a little nervous about it, but we'll see. I get the impression that I'm the only person that's taking advantage of this deal. I hope that the 50s are better than the Mirage Omnisat Floorstanders that I had.

Your EMP EF50s are a little below average in effciency with a sensitivity of 87dB / 84db at 1 watt at 1 meter. It will take a pretty strong AVR to drive them to full potential.

Depending on how loud you like the sound, you may or may not be happy with you LARGE room.

Thanks. I put in the numbers to the calculator, and I read the entire page and interpretations, but I'm not sure what it means to me. I typically don't like playing movies or music at very loud levels. Should I interpret the results to mean that I'll have to really crank up the volume to get a moderate listening level in my big room?
