I am looking at purchasing an entertainment console in the near future. Dimensions are about 60"wide x 30" tall x 24" deep. The wife would rather have the center speaker (CLR 2500 by Definitive Technology) inside the cabinet and not sitting on top. I am concerned placing it in a confined area with the powered sub. Also, if I place in on top of the console im sure the wife will want it pushed all the way back. That will leave about 8" of horizontal surface from the front of the speaker to the edge of the cabinet. How bad will that affect the sound? Thanks for any help.

Well first off, unless you disable the sub in the center, it's going to shake the hell out of your electronics and probably make noises you won't like. Secondly, recessing the center will be very bad for sound, as it will severly limit the dispersion of the drivers. Obviously it would be best outside of the cabinet, but if it must be inside, then it should be protruding somewhat, or at least flushed.

With it pushed back that far, it will sound terrible. Try to do what Jaxvon said - make it flush at the very least.

Is the 8" driver top firing? If so, putting it inside sort of defeats most of the purpose of having it, so you'd be better off going with one of the lower ones that does not have the built in bass driver and amp.

Since you just purchased it, any chance you can return it and get the 2002 as previously considered. If not, then the only acceptable placement is on top of the console, flush or slightly forward with the front.

This is what can happen when all variables are not added into the decision making process.

Thanks for all of your advise. Im not sure what you mean by This is what can happen when all variables are not added into the decision making process AVRat. I have not purchased the entertainment cabinet. I am looking to purchase an entertainment cabinet in the near future. I asked these 2 questions so it would help in my decision making process. I kind of thought that placing it in the cabinet would be a know go along with placing it on the top pushed all the way back. Im not a A/V expert so I thought I would get some other opinions. I think i will put the speaker on top and have a peace of soft thick fabric beneath the speaker that way I can slide it to the edge while in use and slide it back to make the wife happy. Thanks again for all of the advise.

If you were to do that, I would recommend some Auralex foam (designed to isolate a speaker from what it's resting on). The Auralex wedges will also help you aim the speaker down towards the listening position for good sound. You can pick up Auralex at Musicians Friend.
