Dedicated CD Player or use new DVD player for CD's also

I'm adding a HT room to my house. Right now I have a Sony C77ES CD player (one of the old Sony ES models @ 13 yrs old). And a cheap slimline Toshiba player (space was important[wife acceptance factor]).

My question is should I keep the Sony CD player. Or play CD's with a new DVD player. I like the multi disk ability of the Sony. Not sure if I'm interested in SACD/DVDA.

Any suggestions on DVD players would be helpful. And should I keep my CD player after all these years?

Equipment: Denon 2802 reciever, Klipsch Heresy speakers

Thanks, thegreenline

I'd suggest buying a new DVD player. Chances are your old Sony may have trouble with CD-Rs by now (maybe not, but many of those old Sony's don't seem to play CD-Rs or RWs very well). Likewise most new machines will play MP3, WMA, etc and many will play DVD-A and/or SACD.

If your CD player still works fine I'd keep your CD player and get a new DVD player. I have a Sony CDP-C535 CD changer from that same time period and have been looking at changers with DVD, DVD-A and SACD. I haven't found anything with similar or better display features or functions as my Sony. The 535 is most likely very similar to your ES model as it was the top of the line in the non ES line at the time I purchased it. I haven't had any problems with CD-R discs but do not use RW discs. I also have a Sony 700 DVD player and have listened to CD's on both machines. The DVD player is digital and uses the DAC's on my 3805 and the CD player uses it's internal DAC's. While I can tell a slight difference between the two it's not huge and I really can't decide on a preference between the two so I use the CD player for CD's and the DVD player for DVD and multichannel audio. I'd like to upgrade to something like a Denon 2910 but I'm sitting tight until the new HD DVD formats are ironed out. If you like the ES I'd keep it.

greenline,

I was in a similar position, as I had a 13 year old Nakamichi cd player, and purchased a Denon 2910 DVD player, which I now use exclusively for cd playback. I had both the nak and the 2910 hooked up for a while, and was hard pressed to hear much of a difference, if any. The nak then went to the bedroom system, as I have limited space for components in my entertainment center. Have been happy with the 2910, although it's for sale as I'm upgrading all my components. Am demoing a rotel 1072 cd player, which is a very nice player, but no difference in sound quality compared to the denon. if you do buy a dvd player, I would recommend getting one with DVDA/SACD capability. I was a skeptic at first, but I can notice an improvement in sound quality in the two new formats over redbook cd. And the video from the denon is very good, to the point that it removed a new tv from the current wishlist.
