Dedicated 2 channel for an ordinary receiver

Hi, I own a yamaha rx-v2500 receiver and I was thinking of buying either the POlk monitor 40's or the jbl northridge e50 speakers for dedicated 2 channel music performance(strictly) musoc.

Is this advised, I am aiming for a set of bookshelfs or mid-towers. The jbl's are bookshelfs but the can produce bass around 45hz so as to eliminate a subwoofer in certain instances.

I wonder if Axiom or Onix has comporable solutions for the price, the yamaha is 130 watts x2 channels- so i figure for a $150 a speaker or less it my budget of a good 2 channel.

Any thoughts?

Buy something used. You will get way more bang for the buck from an older set of speakers.

Good full range speakers for $150 might be hard to find. And from what I have been reading...bigger speakers are more efficient (ie: easier to drive). If you opt for smaller speakers you will not get the same dynamics as with a larger speaker because of the power limitations in a receiver. Clipping, poping, that sort of stuff. Go for high efficient speakers (95dB @ 1w/1m).

But one thing I have to say is that a good set of speakers for a 2 channel system can be bloody awsome. I have been playing around with my system and have set up a 2.0 configuration just for listening to CDs. No sub, no multi channel stereo. :D My floor standing speakers (a little more than what you want to spend) do a pretty good job with the low end (still enough to shake the floor). I find the sub adds to much muddy rumble when I want punch and clarity. My speakers are better for that.

Good hunting and enjoy.

Floorstander X-LS

I saw a couple pics of the floorstanding version of the Onix X-LS speakers from av123.com. It has the same drivers as the current bookshelf but the larger enclosure will allow it to play down to the 40 Hz range. Real wood veneer, and $300 a pair. Might be worth waiting a couple months.

Here is another good option. Onix X-LS ($200) plus Onix X-Sub ($200). You should also consider lowering the receiver price range and upping the speaker budget.
