I just placed an order for this system as it was for a very good price bit did not think about the area that the sub woofer would need to fill. Anybody used or heard this system? I paid $499. The area I am looking to put this in is 17X23 with a 10 foot ceiling. Should I cancel my order?

Thanks

Well that depends

I believe you are talking about the Velodyne DECO System correct? If so that particular system has gotten pretty good reviews (when it was at an even higher price point mind you) and the sub is really not bad. It is small in size but it still pumps out a good bit of bass. Quite frankly more than the majority of 10" subs in comparison. It will not beat an SVS, HSU, Rocket etc. 10" sub but I am sure it will impress for its size just the same. That is a decent sized room you are working with, not huge but not small either.

You are getting a good deal on what you are getting. You have 2 choices cancel as you stated, which I do not think you should. Or wait for it to arrive and see how you like it, it may be just what the Doctor ordered. If you are going from nothing to this or from a HTiB to this you will be very impressed I'm sure.

I have that system right now, but I'm not using it. It wasn't "Pretty and small" enough for our new house. I did use it for a while in my old place and it is a very nice system. For the price, you probably could not get anything better. The sub is great, for movies and music. It has a 600watt amp in it! The satellite's are also nice. They're very beefy so I hope you have a good plan to put them up. Let us know what you think of it once you get it hooked up.

Thanks. Yes I am referring to the Velodyne Deco system. When I talked to the Velodyne customer service and their Tech support they were totally against me using a 8 inch for that size of a room. Not sure why they would say that considering that users say that the sub woofer is pretty good and yes I am going from nothing to this. I would need a decent receiver for it. Any suggestions on how to proceed?

Thanks

They were correct in saying that. But this 8inch subwoofer is fairly beefy, pushing 600 watts RMS. Still it isn't large enough to really move the kind of air required for proper playback. Plus it's sealed, so it's not as efficient as large ported subwoofers.

Still, this is a damn good set, and you could always add another, larger subwoofer down the road.

Let us know how things work out, and we can further assist in any issues that may arise.

Thanks Sheep. The only thing about adding another sub woofer is that Velodyne recommended I add another one for the SLR series which is quite expensive and I would loose the savings that I am getting by purchasing this system. Before I saw this system, I was considering a Velodyne DPS 10 sub with Definitive Technology's pro cinema 800 speakers with a pro cinema 1000 center speaker. But the system would cost me twice as much.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

I suggest you don't listen to Velodyne. I have the DPS-12 and it wouldn't be enough. The SPLR series is also not going to be enough unless you get the 12 or 15inch. I would look into HSU and SVS's ported subs. Those will be able to fill your room.

How much do you want to spend, and what features are you looking for?

As far as the receiver goes you need to figure out what your max budget is and what feature set you will need. Most of us use the receiver for both audio/video switching. Meaning that the video and audio both pass through the receiver, the receiver is used as a switch. That way you will only have to run one set of cables to the TV and the receiver will do all of the switching for you. So this brings into question how many componets do you have? DVD, Cable/Sat Box, Game console, etc. And how many (if any) are High-Def or are you planning on going Hi-Def in the near future. This will play into how many component/HDMI inputs/outputs you will need on the receiver. Taking all of this into consideration you can then look at your options and we can chime in with our input as well. Welcome to the forums. Give us some feedback and we will try to help you out. There are a ton of great folks here!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks. Yes I did read the review and appear to be good. However the factor that is troubling is the size of the room I will be putting these in. Not sure what room size the tests were done in. Also does any one know how the SATs on the DECO compare to Definitive Technology's pro cinema 800 SATs and Pro1000 center speaker?

While I haven't heard them, Deftech is a company I dislike due to their principles.

I know for sure that I will have a HD upconvert DVD player and Dish DVR box hooked up. Would like to spend not more than $500 for the receiver but also if that will help the DECO system perform better than may be I can go up on the receiver since I will most likely be upgrading the subwoofer at a later date.
