Decent Room for Home Theater

Hi guys,
Just a quick opinion poll of this room for acoustics. The image below is my living area (not to scale). Do you think I should leave it the way I have it setup or should I move things around before installing my speaker system?

As it stands, the TV is in front of a window and the rear speakers will have to be around that open area between an adjacent room.

I was thinking of moving the TV to the east wall, but then I'd have no where to put my rear speakers.

Thoughts?

interesting. Well, generally, length-wise room configuration is recommended for audio. As for rear speakers, you could trade off compromises by doing in ceilings.

I don't know man. One thing with length-wise setup is that the display might look smaller and smaller . . .

I would do that.

I would get a big carpet and run flat speaker wires under the carpet for the surrunds.
I agreee. You do not want to have your TV underneath or next to a window if you can possibly avoid it.

As for the speakers, it's easy enough to run the wires underneath a rug or do the in-ceiling thing.

Thanks for the advice. You don't think I'd get any adverse effects by having the glare from that window hitting the flat screen then? It doesn't really have direct sunlight or anything, to be honest. It can get pretty bright (this is my main living area).

The flat screen I'm working with is a 37" Sharp Aquos. I think that's really the only thing holding me back - the glare that could come from that window. Time for curtains! lol

IMO I would purchase some curtains or shutters for that window. I would leave the layout where it is now. And use di-pole surrounds, or in-ceiling speakers. JMO

Sorry for bumping this old thread, but I had one more question.

I'm probably going to get my speakers installed recessed into the wall, but I was concerned about how they are pointed and the height that they are placed. IF I were to recess them, then they'd be at a height of nearly 8 feet. I'm concerned because the listening position is only (on a 7.1 system - talking about the left and right speakers) 9 feet away.

Do my speakers needed to be pointed at me? Or can they be pointed horizontally and still be great? Is having speakers mounted that high a bad idea?

I'm itching to buy the SBS-01 7.1 system and to get it "wife-approved", those bad boys need to be recessed cause they're huge. Otherwise I'm stuck probably buying some overpriced Bose setup.

Thanks in advance for any help.

You do not want to have freestanding speakers, either floorstanding or bookshelf/stands mounted in wall recesses.
If you don't want freestanding speakers go with either on-wall or in-wall speakers, as they are designed for that purpose.
And there are many, many more choices than bose.
On-wall speakers that are only 6" deep look very good mounted on the walls, no matter what their size.

I see; so bookshelf speakers are not meant to be recessed. Glad you told me! :)

I'm going to have to research this a bunch more before buying. I like SVS but I really need to figure out how I'm going to mount these.

We're also eventually going to put wood floors in, so any possibilities of running through the carpet are out.

Since they are a bookshelf speaker, I'd consider putting them on a stand and setting them behind the couch, but where does the wire go? If a carpet/rug goes on the floor, sure the wires can go underneath but then we'd have to have a rug going from wall to wall (don't think that'll fly).

Even with a wood floor you'll still have baseboard. So you leave a gap between the first/last floor strip (and at the ends as well) and the walls. Run the wire in that gap. The wire can be poked through the drywall, below the top of the base line and fished up one foot to a cutout in the drywall using a speaker wire cover plate. Then you just intall the baseboard.

And you don't want the rear or side speakers right next to the couch anyway. So you stand the speakers a 1~3 ft from the walls.

Regarding the room layout image - which wall is the East wall .... and is there really a dead guy in your room? ;) :D :D
