I'm awaiting arrival of a Pioneer 1015 unit with the 7.1 THX 2..
dumb question -
what would be the minimum DVD player I should look for? (Am I correct in thinking that the DVD player needs to be able to pickup the enhanced audio signals?

The THX certification doesn't denote any special signal processing. All it means is that the receiver meets certain audio parameters, nothing more. Personally, I wouldn't go too nuts with a DVD player just yet, as we're at a point where technology will be changing soon. Get a plain-jane "el-cheapo" from one of the predominant manufacturers (i.e. panasonic, toshiba, pioneer, etc.) and you will be very happy, as you will get your 5.1/7.1/whatever from any of those units.

NotherNewbie, You did not tell us what type of TV you have??? It may not be important to you but if you have a HDTV you might want to even consider the Panasonic S77 if your TV has HDMI.

I Have the Panasonic DVD-S47, and am very happy with its performance.

Right now, for the money? The Panasonic S77 keeps getting killer reviews and is only about 200 bucks. HDMI output and a great image. I have installed several with excellent results everytime.

The Oppo Digital DVD player also fares well for many.

Once again - around 200 bucks.

I would NOT spend more than 200 bucks, and I really wouldn't spend much less unless your budget is just really tight. Upconversion is not the same as QUALITY. So, just because a player has HDMI outputs or DVI outputs, does not mean it does a good job with the process. When you narrow things down, ask again before you buy.

DVD player

Thanks for getting back to me..

TV is a Phillips with HDMI and component vid inputs..
Presently running a Dishnetwork Sat Receiver into the TV now, that'll be upgraded next week to the HD receiver, which I believe uses the HDMI input

so I guess that knocks me down to the Component input for a DVD player..

I'll check the Panasonic units.. Thanks again

I would still get the S77 - but you want a HDMI switch so you can have more than 1 HDMI source... remember, HD disc players and PS3 are coming which also will be going the HDMI route.

A 5x1 switch for under 150 bucks...

Very cool.

I hear the S97 is a bit better for overall player quality - nothing much more for image quality. For 20 or 30 bucks more, it is still available at a variety of locations. Right now, if I couldn't find the S77, I would get the S97 and feel very confident in my purchase of a solid product.
