Decent DVD player that's inexpensive

I currently have an original Playstation 2 doing DVD duty ( I know I can't believe it is still working either) but lately it has been getting very picky about what DVD's it will play and it changes from week to week. You can watch The Patriot this week but not next week kind of thing. I have an SDTV in the living room with my home theater set-up. I am looking for a DVD player that isn't too expensive and preferably with an optical output. I have been staying with the PS2 because it has great picture quality and audio quality through the optical out. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. I would like to stay under $100.

About a year ago I picked up a Sony DVPNS75H new off of ebay for $50 or $60. You can probably find it much cheaper now. It has all the necessary in/outputs and in my opinion sounds much better than the newer Sonys. It's been the best/most reliable player I have owned. The newer versions upscale a tiny bit better, but if you have a standard definition TV, you won't notice anyway.

thanks for the input fellas I did see a samsung that I'm considering it is a standard def player which I'm looking for. I had an upconverting player and it scaled everything in widescreen and stretched the picture even through the composite output. I can only find dvd players with coaxial audio outputs.

So is a coaxial output as good as optical?

Yes, a coaxial output is as good as optical, assuming your receiver has both types of inputs.

I'd try and find a used HD-DVD player (50.00) the upconversion is equal to my Oppo player and it also plays HD-DVD's (bonus)
