Death Cab for Cutie – Transatlanticism Hybrid SACD Review

Let’s just say I was having a bad month…or two. I had ordered a few DVD-A’s for review and was told it would be 7-10 days because one was backordered. I was OK with that as I wasn’t really in a rush and a backordered CD is usually a good sign. When I got my order, two of the discs were wrong and the other played... oddly. Sent those back and... nothing. Months went by as I waited, too busy and distracted by other reviews and life to follow up. Finally, I gave them a call and said, “I don’t care what you send me, just send me something recent and either SACD or DVD-A. Just SOMETHING!” Enter Death Cab for Cutie.

I opted for the CD version instead of the SACD. IMO there's no point to stereo SACD; they sound no better than the CD version, at least to my ears. I think it's the MC aspect that offers the upgrade, not the DSD.

Musically I don't think it's a stretch to call Transatlanticism brilliant. It's truly one of my favorite albums of the last couple years. And the newest one, Plans, is at least as good overall.

Death Cab for Cutie is awesome. One of the best bands out there right now as far as my musical tastes go. I love both Plans and Transatlanticism. My favorite song of the moment is definitely Soul Meets Body (off of Plans). I highly recommend checking them out if you haven't already.

I'm listening to that song as we speak.

They are decent. I wish there was more guitar in it, and a little harder. You can have a nice peaceful sound whille still playing hard. Take Thrice for example.

BTW, Tom, theres a typo in your review. Somewhere it was "ad" instead of "and". For the life of me, I can't find it.

UPDATE/EDIT: Ok, soul meets body, is becoming my new favorite song. Wow, so addictive. I love the sound of the vocals. Great find!

I can't find it either. I'm famous for that sort of stuff...I'm sure it drives Clint crazy.

I've liked Death Cab for a while. And not to go all indie-snob on folks, but I've felt like their albums have become less interesting as they've become more popular. That's not to say I dislike them in any way. Transatlanticism was their last effort before big-label stardom (Plans), but was nowhere near as good as The Photo Album, IMO. And Photo Album probably gets beat out by We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes in my book. Still a very enjoyable band, but less interesting as time goes on. I've seen them live and was impressed, but like all things that start small and go big, they're enjoyability has declined for me. I still throw 'em on the ol stereo every now and again though. And I'd be very interested to hear this disc on SACD.

3) Title and Registration – (faster) Staticy snare compressed (maybe sampled?) Nice vocals ad guitar line. Xylophone very lifelike
