Hey gang.. keeping my fingers crossed someone can provide some advice for me..

Today I received a Cerwin Vega CLSC-15S and added it into my HT system...

And that's when the problems began. Initially I had serious 'hum' whenever the sub was turned on and the volume brought up to a level beyond 'zero'. This would possibly indicate a ground-loop issue... so I tried a different wall outlet which _greatly_ reduced, although not completely, the hum. A RCA-style ground-loop isolator would also address the issue if I had one on hand..

The input to the sub comes for my Sony STR-DE885 receiver's sub-out.

This worked out great for just beyond an hour of _moderate_ use of DVD and CD listening.. at which point the Cerwin-Vega sub expelled a loud "boom/pop" and produced no sound.

Thinking that the over-heating protection built into the sub had kicked in, or the fuse had blown, I turned the sub off and let her sit for awhile (and confirmed the fuse was dandy).

Upon turning the sub back on, a large "pop"* is heard, followed non-stop by a loud continuous humming sound (not like a ground-loop hum, but the kind of hum you hear when standing next to a transformer sub-station or hydroelectric generator).

* the 'pop' is not like your regular 'pop' you sometimes here when turning on/off a sub... this is more of a "popping a paper bag/ping-pong ball" pop.

..so.. here I am.. heartbroken and dismayed.. at the oh-so-brief 1-1.5 hrs of enjoyment from my Cerwin-Vega CLSC-15S sub.. wondering.. what happened.. and what can I do next?

When you say "received," does that mean given, bought from ebay, purchased new - what I'm asking is if you have a warranty or recourse.

If not, it appears you should try a different driver to see if the amp is functioning, or do a battery test on the +/- of the subs driver points. You can also gently push the driven in and out, and see if it feels like the voice coil has separated. My guess is your driver is shot.

..the speaker itself moves freely.. no feeling of the VC rubbing.. ..upon turning the sub on.. the speaker cone stays forced 'out' while the 'transformer substation' humming ensues..
