My reciever was always kinda messed up (kenwood vr-209, would shut off when volume was loud) so i took the cover off and took the main board out to see if the damage in shipping messed up one of the solder joints. Well it appeared to be fine, so i put it all back in and hooked it up. I left out the FM reciever since it shuts off immediatly when switched to fm. The plugs for the antennae are also a little bent which led me to believe the fm module was broken.
Well now when i try to turn it on the relay just keeps clicking and it never actually turns on. I suspect the relay may have died or something because it wont stay on. Should i test it out? The button for it is a software on of some sort so i could take the relay out and jump the power circuit with a wire to see if it works. Has anyone else encountered this? I can test the relay and if it doesnt engage properly i can buy a new one, but i wanted to know if this has happened to anyone else. I hope it doesnt need the FM reciever to power on because its broken anyways. Also, i noticed there is a row of staggered metal strips that are right by the big heatsinked transistors and they were all touching. Im not sure if they are painted or not, but the reciever got a little warm when it used to shut down so it led me to suspect those were not supposed to be touching. Are they supposed to? Also, i considered adding a fan to cool it down since it seemed to be very warm at times.
EDIT: the relay seems to be working ok it just seems to be the power mechanism that isnt working correctly, i may go down to the vcr repair place and get a new ribbon for the power button, or ask if they have one i can test it with. If that doesnt work i might put a toggle switch and fuse inline and wire the power straight to the transformer.
